How Quick Is The First Sale?

Hello,

I am very new to FAA, so I am just testing the waters. I know this questions is dependent on other things as well but generally speaking what is the averagr time frame for the first sale for an artist on FAA?

That's like asking "How many straws in a bale of hay?"

There are thousands of artists here with thousands of subjects further divided by style. There are some that have sold within days, most of us who have sold took months or years.

Market yourself and hope people are interested enough to buy.

that is what I was afraid of but that is what I thought the answer would be.

Thank You :)

How fast can you send your buyer to the image?

I would bet some will say they have no sales after 2 or 3 years, and some maybe a sale after a week or month. Depends on tons of different things. The for sure fastest way would be to send a client here to buy the image.

Your painting looks a lot like Warriors: Legends of Troy.

In general, it takes a while to really start selling. It takes months of hard work promoting/adding images/building the portfolio before sales become consistent.

there is no average, it depends how well you market yourself and how marketable your work is. it could be 10 min, to 10 years. the art you have here is nice, but it's only one thing and has a very limited demographic.

Photography Prints
your probably going to have printing issues with this, it looks like it was doubled in size, it's rather soft up close. if someone ordered the largest print, they would probably talk to you, and you could lose the sale if ordered.

http://ogig.blogspot.com/2011/03/warriors-legends-of-troy.html here's a better more clear version of it.

the work has to be your own, unless you are this person - someone of a japanese name, then there is no problem.

I think this question ought to be banned from the discussion threads. Especially because of this kind of thing.

... but it is kinda cool how fast folks around here catch on to it!

I guess that's the END of this discussion. - the image has been removed. LOL Mike - you are way too on top of stuff.

when images look out of place, i get suspicious. and when i get suspicious i get googling. and when i get googling i find stuff. and i found stuff.

Sometimes testing the waters means you should find another lake...

or in this case, borrow someone else's pole.

by suspicious, do you mean, "no way this guy painted this, it's too good" or did he have too many different types of images that didn't make sense to be under one artist? How do you sniff them out? His profile is empty so I never saw any of the images except for the one you linked, which for some reason is still visible.

Jesus, you could spot that fraud a mile off. See my earlier post. You don't have to be Hercule Poirot to do a Google image search.

he only had 1 image, and was wondering about a sale. if he more work like that he wouldn't have to worry about how long it would take, it would just sell. once an image is copied to the forum it stays in the forum. same with groups, contests and threads - if their account closes it all stays.

for this one it looked out of place compared to the avatar. it was an image that was like 8000px across (already a red flag, but it could have been scanned in). and it was really blurry up close. not a single thing looked sharp. so i ran a google image check and there you go. some asian guy xbox images. and for the fun of it, his avatar was taken from a stock site.that's not original either.

often if there are a number of images, - snap shots from vacation, a dog, a blurry something and a super fantastic shot of a mountainscape at sunset, with fireworks and dove - it's easy to figure out which ones are stolen.

other times, the style changes. you know how many people have a style or a certain look, a certain item they shoot over and over. and if you look at a folder of stolen things - the styles change drastically. often a thief doesn't see the differences between styles and chooses anything they find.

In short, you could just look at it and say, "This is BS". Did you notice that he was offering the "original" painting in a size that didn't match any of the print sizes? And for heaven's sake, that image just reeked of video game art. Positively reeked. If he was the creator of it, he'd have had more stuff up, and would not be offering a fairly large original painting for $500. That's the thing about poop. You can actually smell it.

i never even looked at the details to be honest. i usually look at keywords, description, and a close up. i'm not really familiar enough with games to know what is what any more - i'm from the pacman era. i reported it silently, but saw your ID so i mentioned it here as well.

many people that make stuff like that will also have an avatar that matches the type of drawing. i doubt they would post the avatar they used, i would imagine it would be more dragon like.

mike you are right, that IS where I got my profile pic indeed or somewhere similar
http://www.thinkstockphotos.ca/image/stock-photo-hide-your-face-anonymous/175125519
On the profile tab it said you need a pic, no where did it say it HAS to be yours, I could be wrong though seeing how new I am. Let me know if that is incorrect.

thx

in general it's best to use your own images. and if unless you bought that image from that site, you can't use it because it belongs to them. it's still stealing. to start of on the right foot its best to just show your actual real face - you shouldn't have anything to hide. usually it's presumed that it's your picture.

however on the upload page for artwork - it says it has to be your image, and that was totally ignored.

I sold mine within a month but I notice that you don't have any photos up for sale so it may take you longer if you don't have any that are up for sale ;-)

Mike Savad

he had one up, but it was ummm... borrowed from someone else.

mike I did buy the picture though, thus now watermark. It is of web quality and matches their said dimentions, not the highest quality but thats not what I was going for. Should it be changed?

*no

Louise Reeves

Unless you own the license to that image, you can not sell it. Watermark or not, you have no rights to it.

Mike Savad

if you want to keep it then do so. however your avatar represents your brand, and people like to remember a face. taking a shot of yourself with a phone or whatever is often better than stock. especially when it's searchable. it makes it seem like your hiding. and that's never good for business.

in any case avatars aside, posting your own work here could take a short or a long time depending on how good the work is, and how well you market it. any of my pieces could take 3 months or more before it starts to sell, some takes 4 years or more, and some i've never sold. i have over 2200 things right now, and you never know what might take off or be a bit. as an artist you have to create almost non stop, and advertise. however as said, it has to be your own work. it can't be modified work - because it still wouldn't be yours. people can get into trouble selling the work of another. just so you know.

anyway if you have any of your own work you'd like to post, you can give it another go.

I will post some soon, but as a non premium member I only get 25 listings, so judging from the discussion and what you said thats probably not going to be enough I am guessing.

Mike Savad

it might be enough it might not be. there is an artist here that only sells 2 things, but over and over. start with 25. they could be popular. but again, make sure they are yours, and not found any where on the web. minor modifications don't count as original creations.

there are people on this site with 5000 that don't sell at all. it really depend on content and advertising.

I was little surprised to see some marvel/dc and other stuff here because I generally thought fanart cannot be sold due to licensing restrictions.

No way this guy is for real.

This is not a get rich quick scheme. It takes a long time to build up a body of unique high quality work. If you have that and you do everything else right you can make some sales right away. A good judge is how well you have sold in the past. If you are all new to selling as art it can be a long time. Or maybe not.

Mike Savad

there is work here that is stolen, and it's reported - don't know if its taken down. other stuff is fan fic stuff and i guess can be here. but it ideally can't be taken from another site and called your own. that one is frowned on.
