I Am Looking For A Flip Box To Display Photographs.

I am getting ready to hang three canvas prints on the wall of a hair salon.

As well, I want to place a flip box of 8x10 prints mounted and matted.

I have everything I need except for the flip box. I have found a couple of wooden crates that might work, but most of which I have found are cardboard boxes.

The boxes should be at least 12 inches by 12 inches, about 7 to 12 inches high.

Does any one have knowledge of a online vendor selling suitable boxes?

Walter ,

I was just looking for something for the same use for an event this upcoming Saturday. I thought of making one, but don't want to spend for the cost of the wood, or the time involved for something I won't use that much. I have 8.5x11 inch prints mounted and matted to 11x14 media. I did see some plastic file holder boxes (opaque color) that would work fine,at Staples last week, and may go back and checkout the size. I believe they were on sale too.

Depending on the vibe of the salon you could go with the boxes that produce used to be sold in, basic wood with the logo of the orchard or vineyard on them.

I use a clear, Lucite box -- found on Ebay several years ago. It makes a beautiful presentation of my bagged prints.

Walter,

In a Salon, they need to be pretty nice,so William or Wendy's suggestion might work. If you're handy, build your own "browse bins" out of good plywood, with a veneer or some MDF, if you have the time and the talent. But I like to have sided on mine, especially

Low end, I would go visit either online or in person, something like the 'Containerstore" and see what they have that you can convert and use. Even something plastic and clear, can be sprayed a nice matte black and work.

Rich,

The Container Store is a great suggestion! :-)

Walter Holland, You can get 1/4 inch Masonite cut at home depot and use L trim to put the sides and bottom together to make a box.

Walter - they have some really nice boxes at HomeSense and not expensive - in a salon you want to have something that will enhance the décor as well as your prints and get noticed!

I made a flip box for a salon with simple 1x wood. Make the front of the box smaller than the back. Mine was smaller than your dimensions. Maybe 11" across x 4" deep. The front may have been 3-4" high and the back 6".

You can build the entire thing with a 6' board and maybe an hour of time.

Here is an extremely quick overhead drawing of what I built with 1x boards.

You can buy anything from cheap poplar to expensive oak or maple boards to build it. Paint it, stain it, or leave it natural. It is only 5 boards total, easy to make.

Hope this illustration can be understood.

Thank you all for the input. I'll be back later to look more closely as all the ideas.

I dropped by Staples today and found what will work for me for the time being. An opaque plastic file box, with a lid. The size will work well for the 11x14 size mounts/mats I used, plus I can use it for storage of them due to having a lid. Originally $10 plus change, but I had $4.20 in rewards available to use, so the cost was just a tad over $6 plus tax.

It shows as $17.29 on their site, but it was priced at $10.00 in the store here.

Sorry, I internet went down for two days, and is still not completely fixed.

I will try and catch up with the discussion later tonight.

Hello all. Thank you so much for the valuable input.

While woodworking used to be one of the many hobbies I used to have (I have had FAR too many hobbies in my life---someone told me once I suffered from the “Peter Pan Syndrome”---I sold or lost all of my tools, and as well no longer have access to a wood shop. :-(

Just so you will know. For my first project I settled on a woven basket I found at---of ALL places---Lowes. LOL.

While I thought about closing this discussion, I will keep it open. I am going to “trick” my basket out a bit, and will post a photograph of it later.

Meanwhile, if anyone else would like to share ideas they have I am always open to suggestions.

Thank you all again.

The basket sounds like a good idea, Walter. What method do you have for transporting the art to and from the events? At the moment, it's pouring-down rain here, and supposed to continue through tomorrow as far as I know. I'm participating in a gallery hop tomorrow, and am now glad I bought the covered container to carry and display the matted prints in. Today, I'm going to Lowe's to check for covered containers (plastic) to transport the framed pieces in. I only have seven (framed pieces) at the moment, so should be easy enough to find what I'm looking for. Might look for something with wheels if the cost is not to much.

You can use a cardboard box, but make it a bit more fancy. E.g. Get some cloth that matches the decor of the salon and drape it over and around the box.

Thanks, Greg.

To be clear, I will not be taking the work to events. Not at this time at any rate. I am going to place it---and more when I am able---at the hair salon.

That is where it will stay.

Love the idea of the covered cardboard box, Steven.

I may consider that for a flip box at another location. Thanks!

The store I'll be in tomorrow during the gallery hop event has an assortment of baskets, and I'm going to ask the owner if she minds if I use one to display my matted/bagged prints in. :)
