Start Of New Career

I obtained my Michigan real estate salesperson license today.

It may not be a "dream job" (why can't I just make $500,000 per image?) but I think it is a pretty solid field (yes, things are getting better) and the commission based pay still allows time for me to make this photography a good paying hobby. I figure if I make $5,000 a year selling photographs that is a lot better than other hobbies people have.

I have 6 art shows on my schedule this year, FAA, and a few local stores I can sell in. So I am in no way giving this up.

So, I am not quite ready to say I DID fail* at a career in art, I am just readjusting my money making options!

*some of you will know what that is a reference to.

I can see some cross-marketing with your new profession, selling houses along with your photos, " buy a house from me you will received a signed print for your new home."

Oh sure, Michigan. Like that's going to help me. Get your butt out here to New England and give us a hand finding a place. LOL!

Thanks for the support everyone!

The head of marketing said my photography career will be a huge help in selling houses. People care more about the pictures then the descriptions.

Alfred,
I think I will give a matted 8x10 to everyone that buys from me at closing!

Marlene, not changing horses, but riding two at one time. Like they do in the circus!

Roseann,
Move to Michigan! I bet you can get more house for your buck. If you are curious go to this site...

and browse some Michigan homes for sale. We live in an area of the country with very reasonable home prices. the average home here sells for about $150k and you get quite a bit for that. (unlike them crazy people in southern California where that won't buy you a garden shed!)

LOL not sure I would survive the winters there. 150k will get you a decent home in this area as well.

Maybe it's your photography skills that will lead you to excel at being an agent. Gotta get 'em up to the door right ?

Best wishes.

Congratulations, John!! I'm slightly obsessed with real estate and thought of doing this myself, so I'm with you all the way! You are right that beautiful photos can help sell a house, and also good staging. Have fun!!

John,

Congratulations on your new career path and for passing the state exam on the first go around - so many don't! RE can be an exciting and rewarding career for someone who is highly motivated, and money can be a great motivator! Next you'll be telling us that you're rubbing elbows with the designers and decorators in your area and they want to fill up their clients' wall space with your photography . . . I'm really excited for you with this new endeavor and I wish you all the best.
