There are people who will actually need that.
What amuses me is the way they show thumbnails as evidence of the camera's ability.

I suspect much of the actual market for a medium format camera doesn't worry a great deal about thumbnails online and goues out to see a rep.

I would actually like one of these.

So would I.... but there's no way I can justify it.

Yupp, me either would be my guess. I think I would go with a 1DX for that kind of money as it would be more versitile in what I could use it for.

$8500.00 at B&H http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=645Z&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma&Top+Nav-Search=

I bet this thing has amazing image quality. But what JC said, I'd rather have the 1Dx all things considered.

That is actually pretty cheap Frank at $8500. Compared to Hasselblad, PhaseOne, and Leica really cheap. $8500 is a MF lens not a body. And it shoots 4k video. Wonder if it is the same 50mb sensor at the new Hasselblad and PhaseOne.

I'm wondering if this is the Pentax answer to Full Frame, as their strategic plan seems to be to dominate the category with APS-C for DSLR's. The only thing missing from this 645Z is the Kodak sensor of the former model ( Similar sensor as the Leica M9 ) ... images looked like film. I do like the grip and button placement of the new 645Z ......

The previous MF digital Pentax was CCD? Guess they are all going CMOS now and adding video too. Leica is supposed to announce a new S at Photokina with a 50mp sensor and 4k video as well.

You have to get yourself a M-E or a used M9 if you want that look now Frank. Even the new M is CMOS.

Yeah John .... I LOVE the CCD sensor.

Looks like an amazing camera supposedly the same Sony sensor as the other MF cameras but a far lower price. Also a large inventory of relatively inexpensive used glass.

Could be a real plus to Ricoh.

Just as soon as I sell a whole bunch of prints, I'll be able to afford it... :)

Sony is also supposed to come out with a MF camera this year as well. Makes sense since they manufacture the sensors. Probably same price point as the Pentax or cheaper. That is going to be good news for MF shooters as the more competition the better. Looks like they are trying to make more MF systems that can be used out the field and not just in the studio like Hasselblad, PhaseOne, and Mamiya. By the end of this year outdoor shooters might now have the Pentax, Sony, and Leica to choose from. Also great portrait cameras as well.

I was disappointed that Bronica never came out with a digital back like Mamiya did.

Or Hasselblad

My old Etrsi 645 is still waiting in the closet. :-(

And to think there are people that think “NO ONE” shoots on film anymore... hmmmm....

The good news is I am a huge Pentax fan, and I will go add this to my wish-list at Adorama. :-)))

Of course the term "medium format" means nothing in the context of a digital camera - it's pure marketing, just like "hyper resolution".

It's just a DSLR with a very large sensor, relative to what's in wide use today.

My plan currently is to ride out the 5dIII until I can go medium format. I don't really see how full frame is going to improve much from the 5dIII camera for the way I shoot, it can cover all of my needs now and do them all well....... but I want more MP to continue to rise in my landscape work. The D800 might be better for purely landscapes, but the focusing and just great through out controls of the 5dIII make it a joy to shoot for my non landscape photography needs. Even if they come out with a 40mp full frame, I'm not sure if I think increasing pixel density on the current size sensor is the way I would want to go.....guess time will tell.

My business plan builds a budget of 20k in the next few years to get a decent MF kit together. I need more stuff like this to come out and start to drive down prices so that I can cover it, because 20k for a phase kit doesn't get me far.

Layering multiple 50 MP uncompresed TIFF files in photoshop to do manual blending right now would bring my comp to its knees, so I am going to need a hefty upgrade there as well.

Exciting things.

Your joking right Jim??? A digital MF camera is not entirely different than a DSLR? Synching and shutters are both the same right? DSLRs have leaf and focal shutters? MF doesn't synch at faster speeds? Basically they are different type of cameras. They might look like a DSLR but they do not function like one.
