The Harlem Renaissance Museum

I am pleased to be a board member and artist-in-residence for this developing establishment. The Facebook page will highlight the people involved in the Harlem Renaissance and point to its influence today.

The Harlem Renaissance Museum will open in Madison, Wisconsin this Fall 2014.

Mission

The mission of the Harlem Renaissance Museum is to act as a bridge between the rich artistic heritage of the Harlem Renaissance, one of America's most creative movements, as embodied in its live and visual exhibits, and the unique experience of each visitor.

Dedicated to the education and enjoyment of its visitors, the reinvigoration of interest in the music, art and culture of the Harlem Renaissance, and drawing on both new and traditional tools of communication, interpretation, and presentation, the Museum aims to serve its diverse public as a dynamic, innovative, and welcoming center for learning through the visual and performing arts.
The museum will be unique--the only one in the world, and will blend art with education to help reinvigorate an interest in the original Harlem Renaissance arts: jazz, tap, classical dance, and writing in and among children.

Madison has a direct tie to the Harlem Renaissance as the first of the Harlem Renaissance, JeanToomer, attended UW Madison and wrote part of his book Cane, here in Madison. He also lived and conducted a significant social experiment here as well. Other thinkers and figures of the movement studied, taught and originated in the Midwest.

Thanks for the like, if you like.
