Congratulations for being chosen as the Featured Artist of the Week in The Gold Standard, Nick. Your images of the Pacific Northwest are beautiful. I’ve got to say that the places you have images of leave me wanting more. Your image of Crater Lake, ‘WOW’ makes me want to get in my car and head there right now.
You cover a lot of subjects. Is there one that is your favorite?
My favorite photographic subjects are landscapes and seascapes.
How long have you been taking pictures?
I have been involved with photography for over 40 years.
I really like your images of, and from, hot air balloons. It is something I’ve always wanted to do. Did you take the flights with the purpose of photography or was that secondary to the experience?
Yes I have always wanted to photograph hot air balloons since the first time I saw them flying. We now have a friend that owns one and we go crewing with him and occasionally he will take us up for a ride and when I do of course I always have my Nikon at the ready. There is nothing quite like getting birds eye images from up there.
Flowers, tulips in particular, seem prominent in your photography. Do you have a personal connection to them?
Yes I have a personal connection with roses and tulips and I really love creating macro images of both subjects.
I showed one of your images, Dreams Do Come True, to a coworker of mine and he was pretty envious. As was I. How did you manage to take a break from fishing to take any pictures at all?
When you’re in Alaska and around all that magnificent beauty it is just second nature to want to capture all the images you possibly can. The fishing there is out of this world but the photo opps are as well. I have been fortunate to go to Alaska twice and want to go a third and a fourth and... well you get the picture.
You have traveled to a number of locations. Are these dedicated photo trips or trips on which you happen to take pictures?
Some of the places I have been are during vacation times and destinations but I incorporate them in with photo excursions. I definitely work my vacations around my photography. I never leave home without my Nikon no matter if the trip is close of far away.
Do you have any advice for aspiring artists?
My advice for inspiring photographers would be this.. learn how and master the manual exposure mode on your camera... learn how to use lighting in your images properly, shooting during the golden hours in early morning and late evening.... and learn how to develop your eye and really concentrate on how to compose images properly. Those are just a few.. I could write a book on the rest.
Do you have any of your own images on your wall?
Yes I have a few of my own images on my wall. My favorite one is of the Hale Bopp comet captured back in 1997.
And finally, do you have a piece or set of pieces that hold special significance for you.
I assume when you mean set of pieces you mean images? If so, some of my favorite images are of my family and my one and only grandson that is estranged from us.... I don't have any of those posted on FAA.. they are personal.

Wonderful interview Chris and I enjoyed learning more about you Nick. The images in your Gallery are just awesome. I totally understand the camera goes wherever you do. Although, I am only snapping for reference photos, anytime I go somewhere, I see a million images I would love to paint.
