i have a OR hat, it's for sun protection, but the brim doesn't last long, it's not stiff any more, and every time i put my camera to my face, the hat is in my eye. i'd like to find a hat, with a brim that can bend out of the way. it has to be a brim that goes all around the hat. and it needs to be light weight.
is there a hat like that? oh and it has to be nylon or cotton - no polyester. i've looked through OR (outdoor research and wrote to them), but haven't found what i wanted. is there another hat company? something to narrow down my search?
the brim can't be totally stiff either as the thing has to fit in my bag, and i have to be able to use a camera with flash without it pushing off the hat off.
thanks

Are you familiar with Tillie Hats?? Try a google on "Tillie Hat".
EDIT:It's Tilley not Tillie

IFRC Tilly hats come with a lifetime guarantee. I never owned one but some birder friends do. For photography I use that style but not a Tilly brand. The reason I don't is they are too hot for Florida. As with T-shirts I want the thinnest ones, which usually are the cheapest. You can but them everywhere. It shouldn't be too hard to find a 100% cotton one. I only where 100% cotton because my skin is extremely sensitive. Walmart is a good place to look. In the South they are at most convenience stores and drugstores. Still a Tillly sounds like it wolld be a good investment.

I use a variety of hats, but they are all Australian. In cooler weather I use a kangaroo leather barmah hat. (Www.barmahhats.com.au); they have other material as well. It has a brim which remains stiff, but is packable. In summer I use a Jabiru hat, which has a mesh top; however this one is not packable

I've been using the Booney hat since last summer. It's comfortable and I've gotten over how silly it looks.

I like wide-brimmed hats and have used a few cheap and expensive ones. This is my current one--very functional, big brim (especially in the back, pictured left), seems durable, lightweight, looks good, and the price is right.

I use a Tilley hat. You can get them vented or with a lot of mesh to keep cool. they're a little more expensive but worth their weight in gold. It was recommended to me for an African trip....now I never leave home without it. Plus it has a lifetime guarantee :)

Here you go, Mike: A Boonie Hat selection from the US Calvary Store. I have a mil-spec one I've been using for about 15 years, and it's still in really good shape, water-repellant, and the brim will flip-up and stay up when I want it to.

I recently looked at buying a Tilley hat, but not willing to pay the price.

yeah the tilley's are a bit expensive for a hat. i was wincing at the $30-50 i paid for other hats. i'm still narrowing down pillows... gotta find something, this one is too floppy now.

Sue Long, which Tilley hat do you have? Bradford Martin, do you have a link to a picture of the type of hat you have? I too, live in the south, and want something cool. Last time I looked at our Walmart I couldn't find anything. What department would they be in?
Jai,
I don't believe you'll find a Tilley at a Walmart; maybe, but wouldn't count on it. For your location, try Gander Mountain:

No Tilly at Walmart. I was just saying I like the imitation tillys because they are lighter and cheaper and breath better to keep cool. Anywhere cheap hats are sold. Wlamart mens dept.

I'm a fan of the Columbia brand Booney hat. I have three of them so far in various shades of khaki. I like that the crown has an adjustable cord so it holds tight to the head and wont blow off in the wind. They wash very well, and hang or lay them flat to dry so they don't loose their shape.

Thanks Greg, I don't necessarily want a Tilley. What I was asking is if Sue or Bradford could provide a link to a picture of the type of hat they have that they like. I need a different hat - I am a birder - and it does get hot in Tennessee so I want something cool like Bradford mentioned. I've gone to the Tilley's link but there are so many hats to choose from. The Booney hat Laura posted looks interesting. I will check the men's department at Walmart and see if they have anything similar there. Thanks Bradford.

i've always liked columbia's stuff, but they make everything with polyester and i'm allergic. can't even wear a rain jacket i got from them.
---Mike Savad

You may be allergic to the chemical that is sometimes used to make them waterproof. You can wash them to remove that chemical from the hats and the jacket too if you don't mind a rain jacket that's not waterproof.

it's the poly itself. it can be a cotton blend or anything with poly and it's unbearably itchy - like fiberglass. worse are the dust masks - they are all poly and right next to my eyes. my eyes swell for days, it's not a good idea to scratch at your eyes, yet thats what i do. i found that poster tack putty helps pull it out. but i have to make sure to bring my own blankets, towels, sheets, pillows, etc to hotels and such.
it took me a while to figure that one out - same with ivy - plain old ivy - terrible reaction. i can almost feel it growing under my skin. bleah.
the waterproofing comes in the form of the material itself, a special weave as far as i know.

Jai Johnson, I've added the link to the type of Tilley hat I have. Some have even more mesh. I wore this traipsing around Africa for 2 months in some extreme heat...the great thing about Tilley's you can dunk them in cool water and wring them out, they hold their shape , then pop it back on your head for extra coolness. They have a great cord attachment for high wind areas, very adjustable.. Prior to that , every couple years I'd spend $30~ on hats that just didn't stand up. I've had it for over 12 years, definitely some of the best money I've ever spent. :)
PS No I don't work for Tilley lol...........but maybe they should be paying me commission

A woman watched helplessly as a giant wave washed her grandson out to sea. "Oh Lord, please bring him back! I'll go to Temple every week!" A few moments later, the boy washed up on the beach. The woman looked him over, then shouted to the sky, "HE HAD A HAT!"

Mike, if you cut holes for those ears I'm sure it won't fall off.

Sounds like you are describing an "Umbrella Hat" - Adjustable - Keeps your head dry, leaving your hands free. Folds flat and compact.
Sue, thanks for the link to the hat you have. That helped to see the style and shape of it. I did find one at Walmart today (not as good as the Tilley hat of course), thanks to Bradford telling me where to find it. It's tan, it's lightweight and cool. The brim is approximately 3.5 inches wide all the way around the hat. It's enough to provide some shade, but pushes up easily out of the way when needed. It has two metal snaps on the sides to secure the brim up better if I want. It also has a cord to keep it on. And, Mike, it says it's 100% cotton "exclusive of the decoration". The "decoration" is a small 2" embroidered (with thread) Budweiser logo on the band that is around the hat just above the brim. Not sure if embroidery thread is polyester, but maybe it could be removed? It was only $10. I might even go back and pick up a second one, just in case something happens to this one. It will fold up and go in a camera bag easily, too.

i added to my walmart list, if anything even if i get one, it sounds cheap enough to have a spare, even if it's for a walk or the car.

You may want to check "Duluth Trading" online, they listed several hats that might be what you are looking for.

so far walmart was a bust, they had hats. but it was a cross between old man in bermuda shorts living in florida hats. and kids watching a baseball game hat. though the hat with the beer bottle opener was a cute idea.

Howbout this, Mike.
It affords lots of protection from the sun, while not getting in the way of your shooting eye.

The troops have a rain/sun hat that was used from the days of Vietnam till today in the desert. I have one in my car and it works great as long as you don't mind a military appearance. Check the army surplus store.

Mike, I agree with Dan. I wear a hat a lot and the best one I have is a simple baseball cap...NYY of course:) It's cotton, which you can wear...just flip it backwards when you take a photo.:)

i never liked ball caps, they don't work well in the sun, and i'm constantly putting a camera to my face, i would look like an baseball person sending signals to the other team. eventually i'll find one i like. i guess for now i'll stick with what i have... though i'll look into the jungle hat idea as well. thanks.

Jai, you can use the strap to hold the sides up if you like. It gives you more shade protection than using the snaps. I originally noticed this style during the first gulf war. The soldiers had the Tilly style hats and some used the strap to hold the side brims up. I found one and then later got one that was not camo. I tried all the stiifer brimmed varieties, but i found them all a bit too hot. The lighter ones are a bit floppy but can be managed and shaped with the strap. Just bring the chin strap over the sides and wrap it around the back. Then tension it to get the sides up a bit so it has some style, but still provides shade.

just like last year, i never got a hat. i decided i have to try it out in person to see if it has the right stiffness and light weight. for now i'll just kind of flop it out of my way.
walmart had no hats, it must be state specific. they had ball caps, but i have those. and it's hard to judge a hat online. so next time i'm in some store that has them, i'll have to take a look.

yeah, I was close to getting one online from REI but the shipping added on just makes me want to go try it on in person...but it will have to be on an excursion since it's a hour and a half away.

I have a Tru-Spec Khaki Boonie Hat that is 100% cotton that I have worn in all kinds of places.
I don't care how it looks, it's about comfort about comfort and function.
The brim is enough to give me shelter from the sun and flexible so that it doesn't get in the way of what I am doing. I have even swam with it.
I think I paid maybe $10 for it a couple years ago.
