Late Night "game Of Thrones"

Now that Letterman has announced his retirement I am curious about who you would like to take his place (from the names mentioned or someone new)

I like Craig Ferguson or Stephen Colbert.

Colbert already owns a Throne...

Dave's throne has more swords!

To many "advisors" (Network exec's) behind Dave's throne, Colbert built his own and has a Nation (The Colbert Nation) to prove it...

The names I heard discussed are

Craig Ferguson
Stephen Colbert
Jon Stewart
Conan O'Brien

I'm fine with any of these choices. Jokingly some folks said Leno.

Speculation I heard is that Ferguson might be too "weird" for the earlier audience and might have to alter his style. Same with Colbert. He might have to change how he presents himself now. It was also speculated he might like CC because he has fewer restrictions. Stewart might be able to bring in the numbers, but again, he would have to tone down what he does. CC allows them to get away with a lot more than they would if they were on a network station.

Don't know if Conan wants to try that again.

I would also consider George Lopez or Ellen.

I wouldn't have a problem seeing Kathy Griffin take over.
(Don't throw things at me please)

George Lopez tried and failed and ever since his last comedy concert shown on tv, I've done a 180 and can't stand him. The concert was more of a rally for immigration, with him getting the crowd in a frenzy with "we're taking over" diatribes.

D.L. Hugley should try it.

J - I wouldn't mind Kathy Griffin either.

Louise - Lopez was doing okay with his own show. They felt they could make more money off of Conan, so there you go. DL would be good too.

I did red that Ferguson was "promised" the spot when he and Dave renewed their contracts. But Craig IS goofy (that is why he is my favorite late night host).

But I think Colbert would be a real good fit as well. He wouldn't have to change too much, maybe less politics/more Hollywood but I think he could do it.

Those are the only two I would watch if they got the throne (but I already watch them both now)

If it wasn't spelled out in his contract, those promises, well, I'm sure you know how they go. He is goofy but it seems to work for him. But if it's a turn off to that audience they want to keep, then he would have to make changes or pass on it.

At one time Colbert was a total turn-off for me. Now I like him. It took me a bit to get him. He would definitely have to ease up on his politics. But if he's willing to do it, he would do really well. He's got the charisma.

I'd be open to checking out some others.

Letterman was promised Carson's spot and we all know how that worked out.

But, saying that, maybe Dave remembers what it feels like to be passed over and he will keep his promise to Ferguson?

i hear Leno is looking for a job...

Dave may wish to, but does he have the final say?

John Crothers

I think "Worldwide Pants" is his baby. But I don't know if he has absolute control.

Roseann Caputo

That's the tricky part. Does he have the final say or does someone at CBS have a say?

I'd hate to see Colbert sell his soul to the devil. . .

Ed Meredith

Donna, i totally agree with you...

a female might be a good idea....but not Kathy Griffin....no, sorry fans!

Whoopi Goldberg would be perfect!!!!!

Roseann Caputo

I would watch Whoopi. I like her.

Another name that was tossed around was Louie CK. Apparently they did this bit on his show last year where Letterman came to him and said he was retiring and they talked about Louie taking his place. Never saw the episode of his show, but what little of his stand up I did see he was funny.

Here's a name I haven't heard mentioned (though he did come up for Price is Right)

Mike Rowe, from Dirty Jobs.

Roseann Caputo

Don't know him.

Well Sydne, I wish I could get a "you're not hired" consolation prize like that!

Craig is good. He just may be too different for mainstream late night show. I think he enjoys a time slot where he can pretend nobody at CBS even knows he is on the air!

Well it's a done deal... Colbert to Succeed Letterman on ‘Late Show'

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/11/arts/television/stephen-colbert-to-succeed-letterman-on-late-show.html?hp&_r=0

“I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth.” - Colbert

I'm happy for Stephen but saddened at the loss of the Colbert Report. Here's hoping he can bring some of that magic to Late Night.

Donna Proctor

Ahhh, boo-hissss . . . he's a sell-out.

I love him but not enough to ditch Jimmy Fallon since he took over the TS. Interestingly enough, I think the demographics are pretty darn close for both Fallon and Colbert and I think CBS realizes that if they didn't get someone in there like Colbert - it would be a ship set to sink. Everything Fallon touches turns to gold.

John Crothers

If they didn't promote Ferguson this is who I wanted.

He is not going to be "in character" on this show. I guess we will see more of the REAL Colbert. I think he will do a great job. I will watch him. I wouldn't even bother watching any other late shows at that time so there is no competition for Colbert to get me to watch him.

Roseann Caputo

I had a suspicion if he got it he would have to lose the character and ease up on the politics.

Congrats for Colbert.

Louise Reeves

I liked the Colbert Report but putting him on Late Night is going to be like tying down a race horse. The guys in the big offices won't give him the freedom he has now, IMO.

Agreed, Louise. He's going to have to rein it in a bit. :-)
