Working In Series

When creating a body of work think about creating work in series. Series are attractive to galleries who want a series of related work for a show. They want a common theme or style that unify the work. Commercial art licensing is looking for series so they can put a body of work on several products in a product line. Magazines, blogs etc want to be able to show a series of work. Creating a series is one of the best ways to gain attention to your work.

Thoughts? Experience?

For me my series on traditional maple syrup production in Vermont lead to a gallery show.

i usually don't do it as a set, or at least not in a row. if it happens it happens.

I also was told that a series is needed. I am wanting to join the The Royal Society of Marine Artists but have no hope just yet.

Agreed, Edward!

I've had two series-based shows, and many of my series have sold multiple times each.

I love working in that format -- being hit with some adrenaline-inducing inspiration, then immersing myself for days or weeks at a time. Series work is exciting, creatively satisfying, and can be profitable.

I've found them to be especially popular in commercial/office spaces. A multi-piece set or series is a great display solution for lobbies, waiting rooms, and hallways. Great for hallways and staircases in the home, too. :-)

Arrrggghhhh -- the curse of the dreadead non-working links! Sorry, all -- cut and paste time. :-/

usually sets form as they sell, but they never seem to sell as a set. like i have one that sells well, but the other one just sits, even though it's the same theme. maybe if it were all lined up it would work better.

True a series can be sold to an office building or something.

I saw somewhere that for licensing on products, companies like to see something like 10 in a series.

It has never been a conscious decision for me to work in a series...I am curious as to why it s a 'choice' for some.....if you are authentically creating, you work will move through phases, styles, subjects...and those are all series.

yes, absolutely! All my exhibitions had a theme which helped to sell more than one to buyers. At one of my exhibitions, a buyer brought seven paintings at the opening night as a collections. it happened to other artists as well, collectors often purchase the entire show by an artist..

Hiya, Marlene --

It's a 'choice' because I love doing it and start out with the intent to make more than one related thing; to purposely carry the idea out to series-level.

Sure, a series or collection can grow organically, but -

Deliberate intent + considered application = Choice

There's absolutely nothing inauthentic about personal choice. Not in this case, anyway. (See the current Kardashian thread.)

Marlene, I always loved your Prayer Series....I bet they might not sell as a series, but each enhances the beauty of the next, in concert, visually,emotionally...

Marlene - you don't consider your "slices" a series?
