Has Anyone Done A Shoot Specifically For An Author/book Publisher?

I have been approached by a person who is writing a 'How To" book, which needs photographs. I've never put together a proposal for this sort of thing. She estimates the shoot would take 2 days. The location is only a couple miles from my house, so travel isn't an issue.
She wants approximately 200 images, exclusive rights (NOT copyright).

If anyone would be willing to give me some assistance on this, I'd be EVER SO GRATEFUL! Please feel free to e-mail. ASAP, of course! :-)

Thank you in advance.

Carol,

What is the book about and what images need to be created? A food book, crafts, etc. Will you have an assistant/stylist to help set up the images. Have you ever done any table top before? We need more info,

Rich

Sorry, Rich. It's on equine massage therapy. Probably no tabletop necessary. :-)

She gave me a link to a book with a similar subject, and the photos in that would be no problem. I doubt I will need an assistant, as most shots are closeup, so ears/standing square and other such challenges of conformation or portrait shoots don't really apply.

Does this help?

I REALLY wish FAA had an 'edit' button available.

I don't know yet whether she needs SOOC or processed. Of course, that would figure in dramatically!

I have a normal full-day session price, and I could just multiply that and figure a price per image. That is the price I'm kind of in a quandry about, as even my normal full-res personal use fee would make ME ecstatic and probably give her a heart attack. And do you surcharge for the exclusive rights? I would think so, but don't know what an appropriate range might be.

Do you get co-billing on the cover? i.e. "photographs by Carol Lynn Coronious" or a cut of the royalites? That's another way to price it.

Carol,

Glad to hear,no horses on tables!

What about lighting? Everything out doors? What about clouds, sun, clouds, and different exposures of the horse and work, will that look ok to your client. Can't see doing 200 shots, with horses involved in 2 days, unless very long days, then I would price it that way.

Even only charging $10/shot which is cheap, leaves you with a nice project, which comes out to $1,000/day rate. I would ask for at least 1/3 up front, half would be better. And then the balance upon delivery/acceptance of the images. Make sure that this client has a very good sense of what images she wants and doesn't throw something in that is beyond this job, or your experience. 2 days still sounds a bit short for 200 images and live animals.

I would bill the 2 days, say $1,000/day, with a $500 fee for post production of those images. There will be a LOT of editing, to get to the final 200 and even $500 may not cover this work.

If she seems reluctant to an advance, then I would be concerned about the rest of it, from paying you to publication of the book.

I would also ask,in the contract, for full credit for this project's images and maybe even a small bio and link,at the back of the book, you never know where this may go!

Thank you both!

Edward, I'd assume not - co-billing or royalties. I would definitely require acknowledgment on the title page and credit by each image (might not be a dealbreaker with 'All photographs by CLC' on the title page, but would prefer it). And I'd rather get paid upfront than depend on royalties!

Rich - you have obviously never shot a horse show. :-) Or most horse & owner private sessions that I've done. This actually should be easier, because with any luck at all, I will be able to position the subject(s) so whatever background shows does NOT include the detritus usually abundant at shows/events - AND in good light! Oh - and we'd have a rain-date. That part really doesn't bother me. And since I normally shoot pretty close to 1000/day at shows, All that with little regard for the weather - on spec! I'm not too concerned with the number required - especially being able to set them up over a 2 day period.

So you would bill it simply as per image - without a day fee? Just clarifying - not being greedy. Figuring 5 days for the job, that's better than my 'paying job' day rate! :-) Which I will be retired from in three weeks, so I will be able to do this project full time for that period.

I agree about a percentage up front - and REALLY agree about concern if that's not acceptable.

LOVE the idea of asking for a pic, link, & baby-bio at end.

Your suggestions are spot-on. Thank you!

You might try getting in touch with FAA member Jan Bickerton whose company Red Edge supplies images to book publishers.

Carol,

Actually I have shot a few horse shows!

Is this what the book is about? I thought more about the massage aspect and if so, that's planned images and usually in some order and also more close-ups than straight horse shots in a ring. Placement of the hands on the horse, angle of the shot, lighting, etc., seems to be pretty involved.

I'd charge by the day and not worry about adding up images or going over the number requested, makes it easier, but don't forget about the post production aspect too. "Figuring 5 days for the job" is this the Post production thrown in?

I wouldn't spend too much more time on this, until you send a "preliminary" figure over and see what the reaction is, could be shock!

Rich - HEY! OK!!! Then you appreciate the backgrounds! Jumping photos are nicely timed!

You are correct that the book will require closeups/details - NOT like shows. I was just laughing at your concern about lighting and shadows and backgrounds and weather. Of course, this session will be far more 'controlled' regarding all of the above than our usual show setting, although I do not anticipate needing lighting - beyond, perhaps, a flash - and perhaps a remote flash. Note to self: MUST figure out why that didn't work the last time I wanted it to.

Yes, once I confirm she wants images processed (can't imagine she wouldn't), I think I will just give her a figure, and tell her that it includes the sessions, the images, and the single-use, exclusive usage license.

I appreciate all your thoughts - very helpful!

I have spoken with the author and submitted a proposal. Will let you know whether it is accepted.

Thank you for all your suggestions.
