National Geographic Called...

I don't usually post this kind of thing, you know the whole pride goeth before a fall thing, but for this I couldn't resist. Nat Geo found some of my videos on Vimeo and are using some of my footage for an upcoming show called "Florida Untamed: Gator Country". While it's not for my photography, I'll take it! My name will be in the credits so hopefully that trickles down to this site for more visibility. It may also help generate some buzz for my film project coming next year. Not counting on it but we'll see. I've already gone through my entire portfolio here on FAA and re-keyworded everything since doing that on Vimeo seemed to help. And now back to our regular programming...

Mark, remember being humble is a virtue, however when a large company puts up billboards it's called, "ADVERTISING", when a small one person artist does it it's called, "BOASTING". Society has it all wrong. When a small one person artist does it it's still the necessary advertising.

Mark, it doesn't matter if you don't get noticed from Nat Geo, you can now put that on blogs, your web-site, here, and so many other places that will get you noticed for sure. Use them to your advantage now. Also if you can ask Net Geo to send you something in writing, that would even be better to use as well.

Good on you, Mark! I'm sure it will lead to more opportunities. Nat Geo doesn't pick up the phone to call just anyone! That's pretty impressive :)

Mark, congratulations. When they send you their legal papers to sign, read the papers and all their legal wording carefully :) If you have doubts better have a professional consultation.

The article below is about contests, but with some good advice for any contract.

Watch out for rights grabs – National Geographic My Montana contest and SmartShoot (UPDATE)

"But we see a lot of contests that have bad conditions for entry, usually in the form of a “rights grab,” which you’ve also probably encountered in contracts for assignment photography. A “rights grab” takes your copyright away from you, preventing you from reselling your work ever again and, potentially, from even showing your work in your portfolio. It’s a dirty tactic, and it’s sad to see how many photo contests have rights grabs."

What does Royalty Free mean? Royalty Free in Perpetuity?”
What does “Forever hold harmless and Indemnify” mean?

They do, Rose. In the instance I cited previously -- this was a purchase of rights to reproduce a copy of the original painting for the publication.

They were looking for specific content -- I was contacted after they'd seen the piece on my website.
