What Happened To All The Painters?

Is it just me or does fine art america seem to have more photographs than paintings these days? Most of the contest are for photos too...just making an observation.

You got me thinkin here.............. A photographer can go out and take a hundred photos & post them while a painter is preparing a canvas & getting ready to paint. No offense to the picture takers amongst us, but it does take longer to complete a painting. As for me, I am still painting.

I do both. But I have noticed what you mean, especially about the contests.

P. S. I love photography also but since we have so many contests I think it works best when they are photo only or paintings only .

A couple of months ago, I started a "Choose A Favorite Painting of the Artist Above" for painters only. It never had more than a handful of painters contributing and suffered from so many repeat pieces that it died a premature death (in my opinion). So, I too wonder where all the painters are?

Here I am :) I do both. But yes, there are a significant amount of photographers vs. other medium artists.

I think volume of output makes the difference....more photos vs fewer paintings.
Maybe the stats can tell us the numbers?

What Happened To All The Painters? Is this specific to traditional media or are you referring to digital painters as well?

And four year olds can splash paint on a canvas and complete a few of those in a day. What's your point?

If it was limited to just traditional media that might be why. Some have switched to digital and some do both.

Do we allow four-year-olds on here? Lol......Surely the OP means trad painters....the volume from us would definitely be lower than Photogs. Don't know how long digital "paintings" take to do...am told they are just as time-consuming as trad work....as can be for producing photographs, too, nowadays, what with post processing, and finding subjects out there.
Still do think there's more Photography here..

I agree Vivian and am not saying digital is not Art. I do want to make that clear. That is it for me to I have to leave also. Going to work for a little while this morning.

I have yet to find a niche. I thought I had...I think of my specialty is drawing portraits of people and pets. But lately I've been drawing still life, and even florals. All different kinds of subject matter. I notice a lot of photographers, especially those that make a lot of sales, tend to have several different galleries- a lot of variety. So, I've been trying to do the same. I figure the more variety I have to offer, the more likely I am to sell something. Something for everybody. I do get commission work but, for the most part, people want me to draw their loved ones or pets. I've only once been commissioned to do something non living. It was a truck. I haven't been sharing my art for very long (online or otherwise)...only since July. I'm hoping I'll get the opportunity to do a wider variety of commissioned work as time passes.

Despite the variety of my work, I do feel that I've developed a style. At least where my graphite work is concerned. I get a lot of enjoyment out of trying new things and pushing myself to draw something outside of my comfort zone. I would get bored if I had to focus on one specialty all the time. I see more painters/drawers branching out and painting/drawing a wider variety of subject matter. And, Jim, I do think perhaps painting & drawing have become niches themselves.

After over 3 years my sales momentum is starting to move forward at a faster pace. Not enough to write home about but it is showing slow progress. A funny thing happened - a few years ago I went to a Japanese Garden and took some pics. They were half way decent so I tweaked in Photoshop and uploaded to a 'Photography' folder here on FAA. I was thinking of painting it at some point but never got around to it. More to fill up space as I had under 100 paintings at the time. Well, low and behold one sold today to my astonishment. A big one. I would say I invested less than 45 minutes on this so it's a great return on my investment! It's a nice bonus but not nearly as satisfying as when I sell a painting print.

Hello Don, I just love your unique figures, and compliments on your innate colour-sense...all your pix 'work' on every level...happy you have this great talent..........thanks for sharing.

Loretta- what an outcome...shows we must keep the faith in ourselves...so glad your original sold. I think there's a real thrill too when a print is sold..........though am in a trough now myself.......sooo many return visitors/ip matching addresses.....lots of 'lookers', lol. Never give up !!!!

Vivian - I have only sold three in the last two months so I'm pretty much near the bottom of the barrel sales wise. But for me, even three in two months is an improvement. Lol. The one that sold was actually a photo which was so surprising.

Neil, photographic references, you ask whether painters 'still' use them, well, of course, but I doubt that would turn up in a painting's description as necessary to know, for the visitor. Just recently, a dear painter friend here took a fancy to my photograph......btw...I'm primarily a painter...........and from my reference came her stunning painting..........I think it's ok to reference a photo.....most don't paint plein air these days, do they? And, this nice thread celebrates painters of all 'callings' to help against the plethora of (great) photography here.
