Well, first thought ........ Those hills look like wineyards - wine = alcohol - alcohol = addiction which leads to that evil snake face.

The message - how those peaceful hills (Nature) can make you look like a snake when you are drunk.

Abbie, I think it all depends on what it is you want to say, so I would get clear on that and then it should come to you.

He looks like a moray eel, to me. A fishing rod? A spear gun, etc?
If he's a cobra, how about a toy car, an indian design recorder/flute, a bottle of whiskey? (snake-bite medicine). Dead Man's hand (aces over eights).

Perhaps a tarot Death card?

Or a contract with the notation "Sign Here" and a dotted line at the bottom? (Although I don't know how that would relate to the landscape around him. Unless you entitle the painting "I Can Give You The World", in the spirit of that old story from the New Testament about Jesus and the devil:)

I'm with Anita, what you put in the hand will have a huge effect on the message of the piece.

I love the contract idea which was more along the lines of why I painted this. Its not meant to be whimsical or funny but I had a giggle reading some of the ideas :)

My idea was scales, or a dice......future of the world kind of thing

Initial thought was ice cream cone.

Maybe the heart if the ocean if there is a version with the earth or just some ocean waves where the land is now.

Maybe a tornado twirling from the hand down to the ground.

Maybe it could be straightening out its necktie.

In that case a wedding ring, or something else symbolic of a contract or commitment.

It does look like it's getting ready to take a bite of something with the hand position. Adam has some great ideas too.

The beautiful valley of earth below looks so peaceful, and he looks as though he represents evil over the earth. How about something that represents greed, like money for instance...

Interesting piece Abbie, it is like maybe someone wanting to rule the land but is not all they appear to be, a snake...someone not to be trusted. hmmm a name comes to mind in our Government, what's his name? lol...
But maybe cash in his hand.
Or could be an alien visitor to Earth in the shape of a snake...maybe some little spaceships.

Maybe trees with roots hanging wild, or some kind of farm equipment....a tractor maybe. It looks like he's reaching into the landscape with the other hand, about to crawl over the top of it. He/it certainly looks like harm is intended.

Tail of a rattlesnake... his own tail? Old school hour glass timer with the sand in it? Silver or gold stopwatch with a chain hanging. A crumpled or distressed piece of paper with the word "propaganda". Large overlay of a painted clock with hands that can be seen faintly over the mountains in the fore and mid-ground.

A scythe, a cage, a musical instrument - a horn perhaps which he is about to play. A handful of animals, either earth ones he's picking up or strange ones he's setting down. A key.

Wow! Now I am starting to feel something.... Love the time idea!

Also really liking the trees or similar....

Two Cents: Your 'imagination' perhaps...but it seems to be coming from your 'gut' instinct. You have touched on a very sensitive subject that is felt by many people in our time...
That suited man, of great size, stretching over the land is holding a beastly mask in front of him...And the painting gives no answer but leaves the viewer to reflect, question and perhaps also introspect...I find it dead-on wonderful just the way you painted it! Nice, very nice! tdp

The pendant could be a clock to represent time.

My original thought was a pendant representing a wizardly symbol......something mysterious.

I still have work to do but thought you may like to see what I chose....
