A Sale, And Recovery! (disaster Revisited)

Good morning! A few weeks back I posted a sad tale about drowning my Nikon D90. Many of you wrote to offer sympathy and thoughts on getting it up and running. As some may remember, it did not survive.

This week I took delivery of a brand new D7100! Fantastic camera!

But just as wonderful, last night I made my first sale (unsolicited, as opposed to sales to friends and family).

You guys were right on.... Good things can come out of a bad experience and... it was time for an upgrade :-)

Thank Mo T and Andee!

Andee, I do feel blessed to have been able to raise the money. When it happened I had visions of going much longer without it. Well the camera has only been here for a few days, but my initial observations (as compared to my D90):

More focus points means autofocus works more quickly and more accurately. The lowest "true iso" was 200, now 100 means I will not have to rely on the neutral density filter as much. The highest iso is also twice the D90s. On that, comparing iso 1600 on the new camera to iso 1600 on the D90 grain is much less visible. Of course the move from a 12Mpxl to 24 may have some bearing on that. That would be the next obvious thing, 24 mpxls means larger prints! I didn't have mirror lockup on the D90, that should improve my macro photographs. This camera also has an "interval meter" (something that was on my wishlist).

If I remember correctly, Andee, you were/are a D90 user. You will be glad to know that the layout and menus will look very much the same as you remember. If you have an specific questions please let me know.

No downsides per sae, but the file size is much larger. I will have to spring for some larger SD cards. On that, this camera has two slots! And I'm a PSE9 user, Adobe will not be offer ACR upgrades to cover the D7100's RAW files. I just purchased PSE11 and hope the instal goes well. I've hear various things.

These are my initial observations. I will add to this later as the use the camera more. Can't wait for the weekend and some outdoor opportunities!

I will be anxious to hear more. Yes I have the D90 and I

got a lemon so not sure what a good one would be like.

Congrats and many more to come!

Thank you Susan and Katie!

Susan, I used a Sigma 150mm macro, love that lens! Thanks for asking.

My first weekend with D7100.... lovin' it! More on that later...

Great news J Scott.
Sometimes we need to go through quite a bit of discomfort to move on to bigger & better things. Glad this worked out so well for you.

I want a D7100 very badly, but life happens and I can't quite yet. If I make another 70 sales this month, I'll be able to swing it. LOL

Glad that you like your D7100! My the D90 rest in peace.

Janine, David, Alexander thank you!

David, I do know a tad about that! Life does indeed... 'happen' from time to time. I like what I know about the D7100 but at this point the jury is still out respecting how I feel about owning one. This morning was the first day of real shooting and things did not go well! (a true bummer) But, before I go into details respecting that I will give Nikon a chance to respond to my inquiry.

D7100 hopefuls and fans... don't be concerned, I'm sure it's operator error... I'll be back at ya with the in-depth info as soon as I know more.

J Scott:

Thanks for the lens information! I'll check it out. Had you compared it with the Nikon 105mm macro?

I use 32GB SanDisk Extreme memory cards since I shoot at the Large, Fine, image size.

In addition to the Nikon manual that comes with the D7100, I suggest you check out David Busch's "Nikon D7100" guide (try Amazon for a good price and the reviews). Lots of great how-to information there that is not in the manual.

Even though I now use and love the D7100, I am holding on to my D90 for "emergencies" like the D7100 suddenly needing service. The D90 was a good workhorse and never gave me any problems in four years.

You're welcome Susan. I can't remember why I chose the Sigma 150 over the Nikon 105 but are there are definitely some things to consider when opting for third party lenses. My background in with old manual 35mm cameras (mine didn't even need a battery) did not prepare me for the electronic mind bender that you confront in the digital age.

In fact I think I may start another thread respecting today's experiences. Perhaps the gang here at FAA can help me sort this out.

In sort... focus problems. 279 images this morning. Up early (4AM is a challenge for me) off to a favorite spot. I returned home to find that not one image was properly focused. AF indicated good focus. Focus points chosen by the camera were appropriate. But reviewing the images once I got home... very disappointing. If this is of any interest to anyone else, look for the new thread.

Thanks guys!

J Scott:

I don't usually let the camera choose my focus points and I rarely use full Auto. I usually use the continuous AF mode and then select from the 9-51 point setting or Single. From what I've read somewhere, the 51 points take longer to focus. I rely more on the aperture and use 11 or below (larger number) to avoid diffraction. The "good focus" light isn't a perfect judge on any camera, IMO.

Were you using Matrix or Center-weighted metering today?

Also, if using a zoom, I always try to avoid the absolute longest and shortest focal lengths on any zoom lens since under less than ideal conditions those can result in a softer photo.

Susan thanks for getting back to me. I have moved your advise over to the tread I just started about this, I will respond to your questions there. Who knows, this might just help someone else out along the way.
