Alt And Title Tags

REASON FOR ALT AND TITLE

Search engines can not read an image, they only read words. On each site you place the image it may have a special category or subject that you wish the image to be found under. eg you add an abstract to three forums on three specialist sites about different things. On each site you would add the specialist word for the search engine to know that is an image about............(?)

Or, you have a dog and you want the search engine to know its a dog of a certain breed.
Or a landscape needs a place name

etc

You add a descriptive (under 10 words) piece.

eg dog print for sale German Shepherd

The search engine then knows that is a dog, a print, a print for sale, and a german shepherd

It is up to you to change alt and title tags. No site does this for you. They may be different per site you are adding to, and they are only put in as you paste them to that site you are sharing on. You cannot save the changes here on your profile page

HOW TO USE

Look at your code for the images you paste in here. In it you can see

alt='Sell Art Online' title='Sell Art Online'

See there are two there, both alt and title (for different browsers)

You should change those to something like

alt='gothic lace photo by Isabella Shores' title='gothic lace photo by Isabella Shores'

The reason you use both is that some browsers see alt tags and some only see title tags.

The words should 10 or under

1. Grab the link code on your image page

2. Paste somewhere you want it, or to notepad

Which will look something like this

<a href='http://fineartamerica.com/featured/roundup-isabella-f-abbie-shores.html' size='20'><img src='http://fineartamerica.com/displayartwork.html?id=9463259&width=250&height=199' alt='Art Prints' title='Art Prints' style='border: none;'></a>

In it you can see

alt='Art Prints' title='Art Prints'

See there are two there, both alt and title (for different browsers)

On this image I change it to

alt='texas longhorn being rounded up oil painting' title='texas longhorn being rounded up oil painting'

The words must be 10 or under as search engines will ignore the others over 10

texas longhorn being rounded up oil painting

which will give you

texas longhorn being rounded up oil painting

RECAP

alt and title tags are for other sites you share your work to
They are the description of that image for a blind person........ ie search engines who cannot 'see' the image
You add them per site and can change them at whim
they are very important
You need both, alt AND title as some browsers read the alt and some read the title

It should work

cool, I didn't know about the hovering, it shows the title. Yeah, one more computer skill learned. Now I want to know how to put things in bold and italics in discussion threads?

wow, Abbie, thanks, who knew? I am giving it a whirl

Innocence Drawing by Anita Dale Livaditis

And so as not to bore Abbie, this was drawn impromptu with my touchpad while I was sitting on the sofa with my laptop, and I saw Innocence, one of my cats, lying in front of me, and thought her shape was so cute I decided to draw it. I later developed it further and put in my morning coffee and added color. I uploaded that one a while back but when going through my files, I saw this one again and really liked just the simple black and white drawing, so I uploaded it, too.

Edit - Cool, it worked! I hope that wasn't TMI Abbie. :)

You are right, it would make it more interesting. I hope people start doing it.

That way, even if someone's art is not one's cup of tea, one might give it a second look, and not just scroll by.

LOL Hover over the two images in the thread....
see the writing? That is what you add to your images in the alt/title tags

Well, not what THEY have written LOL

Here is an example of what is put if the image is not there (hopefully it will show up in the forum)

this image has been deleted on its server

Ok it is not showing the words, which it would on some places but, if you hover at least you can still see what it says so normally your name would be there and the title of the image.

That means search engines (who do not actually 'see' your images), would see that instead so, it does not matter if the image is removed etc, your name and the image name is still out there

Karen, it is fully explained in the top post. It is any image code you use from anywhere but we are talking about your image code next to the images

But we have no opportunity to change the code when posting a new picture to our FAA account, have we?

James Canning

Abbie, as far as I know thats what I did. I'll figure it out one day I suppose.

James Canning

Thanks Nikolyn (Everybody really)

This is what I have done. Went into Photo, copied the embed code, went from there to edit Image, pasted the code in Image description and altered the" sell Art online" part to the new one and pressed submit.

A Tree lined walk at Sutro Beach Park in San Francisco as the Sun was just coming up. The affect of the Sun shining through the Trees was especially thrilling in this glorious California setting. californiasunriseatsutrobeach

That worked, I guess I put spaces in the description that shouldn't have been there.

Abbie,

Is there any "demonstrable" evidence that this is worth the effort, especially for those with thousands of images to edit? Percentage increase in search results? Maybe?

Rich

Nikolyn McDonald

By jove, I think you've got it :)

Oh, and James, I don't think there's any problem with spaces BETWEEN the words you add (just not a space before the first word or after the last word). That would make the text you've added much more readable and, if I'm not mistaken, would help a search engine pick it up (since SE's are looking for text that is language logical).

Edited to delete erroneous info.

James Canning

Nikolyn, Totally got confused with the whole process, thinking this was a permanent change to the embed code and not just for posting on FAA. Not the brightest "))

The embed code disappears from the Image description too.

Tom Schwabel

Rich, according to Google themselves it does. From a logical perspective, it makes sense to do this. The content in the alt tag is directly associated with the image itself - it's in the same HMTL tag, while the text/context around the image could be something completely different and not as relevant.

https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/114016?hl=en

Continuing on this, I had a look at the alt and title that FAA uses on our profile and image pages. What I found was interesting:

On the profile page, the image's alt and title are "ImageTitle by Artistname"

On the actual image page, the image's alt and title are "FirstKeyword Photograph - ImageTitle by Artistname"

Example:

img itemprop="image" id="mainimage" src="https://images.fineartamerica.com/images/artworkimages/mediumlarge/2/peek-a-boo-tom-schwabel.jpg" title="Usa Photograph - Hide And Seek by Tom Schwabel" alt="Usa Photograph - Hide And Seek by Tom Schwabel" onmousedown="javascript: return false;" onclick="javascript: previewimage();" style=""

So, this tells me I have been doing things ALL WRONG:
1. Titles to images have to be descriptive. It sounds to me like they are of even more importance than the description since it's what is actually added into the tags. I have been using fun and creative titles which may be more fun than descriptive titles but it's all but completely killed my ability to ranked in Google Images.
2. Keyword order matters! In particular the FIRST one is super important since it gets added into the alt tag.
3. If FAA is already adding specific alt information to the images displayed on our pages, can we make the embed code include the same???

I think everyone on here needs to learn about the importance of SEO. I certainly didn't appreciate it and it seems like that lack of appreciation has had profound implications on how I'm doing on here.

Abbie Shores

Rich

There is nothing to 'edit' You are not doing this on your image pages if you read my top post

You are doing this IF you share to a thread on this, or another site. Yes, it is obvious (again if you read my top post) why you should be doing this upon said shares

James Canning

Next step is to post on other sites. :))

Rich Franco

Abbie,

OOOKAY! That makes sense now, Should do this ANYTIME I post an image, somewhere OTHER than on FAA, is that right? So any of the FB groups or pages I belong to, I should "edit" this line of "code" and that will enchance Google's ability to see it and rank it for any searches that come up looking for whatever?

Tom,

Give me a minute, I need to get a step ladder, most of what you said was over my head! LOL! So for example, anytime I post to my own pages on FB, my own groups or pages:

https://www.facebook.com/RichFrancoCars/?ref=bookmarks

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1491076847888451/

https://www.facebook.com/Rich-Franco-Photography-228206364010797/

and my Instagram, Twitter, blogs, etc, SHOULD ALL HAVE THIS EDIT DONE?

Thanks Abbie and Tom and others.....old dog, new tricks....

Rich

Tom Schwabel

Rich - yes, anytime you post an embed somewhere it seems you need to these edits to the embed code.

The rest of what I said was an important observation about how images are actually displayed on the FAA site. Your profile and image pages also display your photos with alt and title tags. These come from your image title and the FIRST keyword you have listed on the edit image page. I take that to mean it is of utmost important that you title your images descriptively and pay attention to keyword order. Otherwise you miss a chance for Google Images to index your profile and image sales pages appropriately.

Nikolyn McDonald

I didn't think you could use these codes places like Facebook . . . more like on your personal web pages or blogs or something.

Abbie, please clarify . . . again, I'm sure as I imagine I've missed it or just forgotten or something :(

Lori Kingston

Okay, I'm trying this out to make sure I understand.

I'm taking the embed coding as it appears with my image:
a href='https://fineartamerica.com/featured/waiting-for-sunrise-selective-color-lori-kingston.html' img src='https://fineartamerica.com/displayartwork.html?id=28336602&width=250&height=188' alt='Photography Prints' title='Photography Prints' style='border: none;' /a

And changing it to read:
a href='https://fineartamerica.com/featured/waiting-for-sunrise-selective-color-lori-kingston.html' img src='https://fineartamerica.com/displayartwork.html?id=28336602&width=250&height=188' alt='man and dog watch sunrise prints by LoriPeace9Art for sale' title='man and dog watch sunrise prints by LoriPeace9Art for sale' style='border: none;' /a

I can't do that on the actual image page, so that it's saved there -- if I want to use it repeatedly, I'll have to save it as a text file. Let's hit "Post Reply" and see if this works! :)

Yeah, I'm gonna have to keep a text file saved somewhere with embed codes if a way can't be added to pre-populate them with something useful.

Abbie Shores

"I didn't think you could use these codes places like Facebook . . . more like on your personal web pages or blogs or something"

Correct

Rich Franco

Okay,

How is this different than, when I copy a link to my Pixels web site when I post an image somewhere? If my link gets people back to my image and the site/products, why isn't that just as good as this edit to the embed code?

And furthermore, HOW did I get the number ONE search result, ON GOOGLE, for this image? 1947 Ford Coca Cola Truck without knowing about this?

Rich

Abbie Shores

Read the thread.

Julie Engelhardt

Just so I understand correctly, do we put spaces between the words or not? Or does it not make a difference?

Abbie Shores

Yes you do. Like a proper sentence

Nikolyn McDonald

Julie,

Look back at Abbie's original post where she gives examples. See this?

"In it you can see

alt='Art Prints' title='Art Prints'

See there are two there, both alt and title (for different browsers)

On this image I change it to

alt='texas longhorn being rounded up oil painting' title='texas longhorn being rounded up oil painting' "

Here you should notice that there is no space before Art and no space after Prints BUT there is a space between the two words.

She changed 'Art Prints' to 'texas longhorn being rounded up oil painting'

There is no space before texas and no space after painting, but there are spaces BETWEEN all the words. Otherwise she would just have a string of letters that looked like gibberish and the Search Engine would throw up its little hands and say, "I give up!" and walk away.

So I conclude that I if I put spaces between the words, it will be fine. I made up the stuff about the gibberish, but it makes sense to me.

Edit to add: oops, I was writing while Abbie was answering.

Tom Schwabel

Interesting observation, I can find many of my images ranked fairly high in Google based on searching words in the title. But I can't find them at all if I search based on the description. I don't know if that's because Google is weighting the title or the alt tag or both very high. But it seems as though the description simply isn't ranked very high in Google's algorithm.

It's a problem for me because I didn't use a literal description of the image in the title. I used creative fun title names that don't often have much to do literally with the image. Live and learn I guess.

Deborah League

Can we (should we) put our names in the Alt and Title?

Abbie Shores

Yes you can indeed and yes you should
