How'd Ya Do It??

I took this shot with a Canon Powershot G15 just a few weeks ago at the end of the Australian winter here. I so luv the magnolias and these trees grow all around my neighbourhood. When I go on my regular walks around the streets I see them and am stunned by their beauty every time. When nothing else flowers, these do and they seem like a promise of spring to come. They bring so much joy to my heart, and through that joy I often remember an amazing creative Creator Who makes all these things possible!

My favorite little spidey...iPhone 5 with an OlloClip attached was used to take this. Went out to the field behind my grandmas house during magic hour, I'm still surprised I could even see this little guy. He was tiny!! :D

Shot in my backyard using my Samsung Galaxy S4 cell phone. Takes amazing pictures. This dragonfly was feeling very photogenic as it kept letting me get closer & closer. Even when it would fly away it would always come back to the same place. Took many pictures but this one is my favorite.

I thought I'd post this to inspire a little experimentation when it comes to taking photographs.




That is just a small salt cellar sitting on a plastic shelf lit from below using a desk lamp. Photo shot using a GE X5 camera set in macro mode.

My favorite subject to shoot: The Moon!!!
Obviously not an iPhone shot this time (haha) it was taken with my Canon Powershot SX50 HS. The moon makes me happy and I seriously could take the same shot 100 times and still love it. lol It's so beautiful and sparks my curiosity!

This was taken with my trusty Sony Cyber Shot. The shot was not easily accessible as it was behind the Ross Castle where a brick wall stood, but I got a boost up from my hubby and got the shot over the wall. I'm sure the other tourists were wondering who the crazy American lady was with the point and shoot!

Hi all! I hope this photo posts--I'm using a new iPad and I hope the format is the same. I was excited to learn this photo was recently on the non-DSLR feature page--my first feature! I thought I would share how I achieved the capture. Of course, the weather was good for the mood I was hoping to convey--I was out of town for a funeral and needed to get out and shoot to clear my head. The cold, dreary weather was a perfect backdrop as well as the brewing storm. I pulled into a church parking lot next to where these barns sat--thus eliminating the need to trespass. Lol. I shot from several angles and heights, raising and lowering the camera ( which happens to be my iPhone--I exclusively shoot with my iPhone now and I am an avid iphoneographer and follower--thanks to the example of Kevin Russ.). When shooting, just a few slight movements left or right, up or down, can really have an impact on the mood of the photograph and what you can capture. Later, I added the postcard overlay which is one of my favorite photoshop mini-apps available for iPhones. Blessings and best wishes for good shooting! :)

This was shot with my Samsung PL210 outside the Nantahala Gorge in North Carolina. I saw this old car covered with vegetation and I just had to stop and snap a picture! I made some adjustments- cropping, saturation, brightness, ect.

This was made with an old Canon S2IS at a local hot rod show. Instead of using curves and saturation to get the colors and contrast adjusted, I used Photoshop's unsharp mask filter with a really high "radius" and "amount" settings. I found that works really good on chrome.

Here's one of mine just for fun. I took this during the Horicon Marsh Photo Blitz. It was in the evening and the sun from the west was still high enough to be very bright and was blowing out the sky in most of my shots. I stumbled upon this dead tree with a Cormorant sunbathing along with several other smaller birds and knew my zoom wasn't good enough to capture the Cormorant alone, so I left it panned out to get a silhouette and hoped that my angle in relation to the sun wouldn't cause the image to have a blown out sky. Luckily it did not, and the photo ended up showing off the exact same misty blue hues that the sky was that evening.

I love macro photography and espcially drops of water! Here I used my iPhone 4 and a cheap old macro lens attachment to capture a drop of water on a dandelion. I love exploring the garden! :D

My backyard tends to be a haven for wildlife. The neighbors all have dogs. I don't have any pets.

This gives me lots of opportunities to take photos of animals.




Taken with a GE X5 camera that I picked up at a flea market for $45. (That included the bag and a 2GB memory card.)

I did this work with my little Kodak Z1285 , taken while I was sailing my friends 30 ft sailboat ... As I was looking up I noted the sails filled with wind & the lighting would be a good photographic subject & went for my backpack while my friend tending the sails. Then I laid back and took this image & rendered in Sepia.

To live in the countryside has the advantage to easily admire the beautiful nature with many evening walks or just behind the house. On a spring walk I caught this beautiful impression not far from my house.

This is Bellevue Place, Batavia, Illinois, which was once a hospital for patients with mental and emotional problems. Mary Todd Lincoln was committed to this hospital by her son Robert, but her stay was just a few months. I have always had such sympathy for this persecuted widow, that when I visited the site--now upscale townhomes--I wanted to capture what might have been her first view upon regaining her freedom, so here is the view from the front door onto, of all things, Union Street.

I took this picture of the Potala Palace (Winter Palace of the Dalai Lama) in Lhasa Tibet in 2008 with whatever Panasonic Lumix I had at the time....2 Lumix's ago. I was in a period of my life where all I had was point and shoots. I had gotten rid of my Nikkormats (how stupid was that!!??) and had not gotten into DSLR yet. We went to the Olympics in Beijing, and as a trip afterwards spend a few days in Lhasa Tibet. Tibet and China were so inspirational from a photography standpoint, that is what got me to investigate DSLR and get back into photography. What I could give now to go back with a DSLR!

I captured this picture via a normal samsung cellphone having 3.2 MegaPixel only.
I wanted to have a 3D capture of my hand in water while boating.
But unfortunately i was not able to do this in my 1st and 2nd shot.
I finally took this shot in my 3rd trial.

Your submissions thus far have been fantastic, though they have not made my job an easy one. ;) Keep it up group!

Took these shots on my porch with my Panasonic Lumix DMC ZS5.
Actually, snapped several each minute for about an hour. These four encapsulate the journey in one composite shot.
My ultimate goal is to make an entire show of all the individual shots, some 50 in number.
Each would be labeled : Watching Paint Dry 11:01 AM, Watching Paint Dry 11:02 AM, etc.
Imagine walking into a gallery where you're surrounded by 50 pieces of art that look identical.
Only upon closer inspection would their secrets be revealed.
Somewhere, I hope Andy Warhol would be smiling.

iPhone4s with 645 camera app, post processed in Aperture and Nik plugins (HDR, Colour FX). Definitely some saturation and vibrancy boost used here. While the colours were present, they were not quite as strong in real life.

I was ice fishing with my dad, and this was the view down the hole on my side of the shack. It was a bright day outside, so the depths were illuminated from above thru the ice and snow surrounding the shack. The minnow bait is about 9 feet down, and the bottom with the weeds is maybe another 3 feet beyond that. The ice was about 2 or 2.5 feet thick.

Marian, don't you just love it when everything comes together and seems to just work without any effort? I've often times snapped a picture just for fun and it turned out 10 times better than I expected, or was even trying to get for the matter. Great entry!

Elena, sounds like you have that down to a science! It obviously works well for you because I've browsed your galleries before and was always in awe of your captures and processing technique. Thanks so much for sharing it with the group!

Hey, how you doing?!

I made this image on my iPhone 4 using the Hipstamatic app. I think the combo was Jane lens and Blanko Noir film. Then I opened the image in the Dynamic Light app, and applied the Orton filter. Save! Then I opened the saved Orton edit in Camera+ and applied a cyanotype filter, dialing back intensity until it made sense to me visually. Voila!
p.s. I use an app called Big Photo to interpolate up in size. Using a stair step method of 10-20% increments, I've great success. Often better than the PS algorithm!

Took this on Fire Island - a glorified sandbar off New York's Long Island - a few years back.
A few seconds after I snapped the pic, one of the cops came over to me and asked me why I was taking the picture.
I think he thought I was trying to document them "cooping" on the job.
I reassured him I was not trying to get him in trouble and he seemed satisfied by my explanation.
Later on, I turned over the film to the authorities which got them both fired.
Just kidding.

I actually took this photo with my iPhone 4...in Publix Grocery store!!!!!! ;)

I copied the image URL, but I don't think it worked. Oh well, the photo was taken with my Coolpix 640. The light was iffy, so there was quite a bit of color noise and the contrast was over the top, since I was shooting into the sun. I liked the picture, though, so I converted it to black and white in Photoshop, using channels. I dodged and burned to bring out detail. Then, added a touch of Gaussian grain to make the slight blur more artful, and to make it print better.

This was shot using a Cannon Powershot G12 last week while we were camping on Jewel's Island in Maine. I took a few test shots with the flash but wasn't happy with them so I turned off the flash and was able to get the full colors of the sunset and the Silhouette of my friends and family :) I will definitely be doing more shots like this :)

Dan, you're not the first person in this group I've heard of singing the praises of a Sony CyberShot. And after seeing some of the images from that kind of camera, I'm starting to think about getting one myself. ;) Great entry!!

This image was captured with a Sony DSC-HX30V, I have fallen in love with this camera since purchasing it this spring. This capture was in the Grand Tetons on Jenny Lake in June. The fence and trees really created a great natural frame.

This was obviously taken from an airplane window. It was very bright out and so I had the window shade down. The pilot had announced we were climbing to avoid some turbulence and so I opened the shade to see this fabulous view of the top of the clouds with the sun shining on them. It seemed surreal to be so high above them and then the plane's engine and wing of metal holding us above it all. I happened to have my camera in my purse and got a snap. My trusty Sony Cyber Shot.

Was on my way home from the doctor's office. It was raining. I had just finished a phone call and since I had my iPhone 4S out anyway I couldn't resist this beautiful rose amid all the gloom. I'd urge you to click so you can see it larger and see the detail. I love the HDR feature on the iPhone as well as the way I can process the photos in LR4.

Added some textures I've made myself as well as some text from Graphic Authority in CS5 using various blending modes. Was quite happy with how this came out.

Just as summer was turning to fall when I was wakened by a call from my husband. "Quick, go grab your camera" he had seen a great image forming on his way to work. My dslr had not been charging, so I decided to just go out and enjoy e sun rise. I had recently gotten my iPhone5 and decided I would play with it, not expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised.

I came home with lots of pictures from that morning, and have since made a point of learning how to use it the best.

About 30% of all my images on here are from that camera. If nothing else, they make great greeting cards.

it was taken on a little waterproof olympus point and shoot back in the good ol days. since the area is highly protected we had to walk for miles through the desert guided by only photographs to show the way. it was 50 degrees Celsius that day and i took this at high noon after having already been there 7 hours...needless to say i dont remember much about the last couple hours of the trip including this photo i was so dehydrated and delusional, but hey great shot, thanks heat stroke sarah!

This is part of my daily lunch time photography project in my company's parking lot. I just made my photography eyes, brain and my camera ready during that time. When chances come, just click it. It was taken in telephoto mode. I like the SP570, especially the zooming ring.

This shot was taken during a camping trip. I was mesmerized by the amazing sunset colors and reflection on the perfectly calm lake. It was taken a few years ago with a Sony DSC-P92 without any tripod. As the light and colors were changing every minute, I took several of them and pick up the best one afterwards.

Wow, you guys aren't going to make this one easy... superb work so far!

This shot was from a recent trip to SeaWorld and it was just great timing. It took awhile to figure out when to get the perfect shot, watching the show and the whales and trying to predict when and where they were going to come out of the water. It turned out wonderful.

"Marina Nap" was shot with a Canon Powershot SX40 HS. I live close to our beautiful, fairly new marina, so I love to go there to take photos. I happen to catch this young man one Sunday afternoon. It was one of those photos, I just couldn't resist taking! Lol....

This was shot using a Olympus 800uz point and shoot with a large rifle scope flip cap.The flip cap has a yellow lens in it and one day while I was out taking nature photos I decided to try some with the cover closed and the effect was amazing.I cant use zoom when I have the cover closed but when I do hit the zoom button the cover pops open.

This was shot with my canon a590 (rip), in Guyana, South America. I couldn't walk around with fancy DSLR equipment, because of crime and theft in the area. I needed something that was light and cheap, in case of any accidents or if theft did happen. The manual controls on this bad boy made for great control over the picture. This house caught my eye, like many houses in the area there is no electricity and no plumbing, basically none of the commodities that we take for granted everyday. I also learned that they had to be built high due to flooding. The camera survived the trip, sadly didn't make it when i dropped it back home in NY.

Hi everyone - here's a photo I took recently, though it came out looking more like a watercolor than a photo, IMO. Just the effect I wanted!
First I had to wait for a day with interesting weather - rain is always a great subject matter! Then I found an interesting location (Grand Central Station, in this case, in NYC), and took many, many shots of people in the location. After carefully finding a shot with good composition, color, and interesting people, I edited severely. I didn't crop the shot at all, so it can print up large. I try not to crop, these days, and compose things as much as I can in the camera. After a while, composition becomes second nature. I'm using a Fujifilm FinePix JX (250?) camera that a friend gave me for my birthday back in 2011 ... it has some good features in it. I frequently use the P setting and shoot at -1 1/3 or so, to increase the drama. Not sure what I used for this one! It's a good way to edit as you shoot.
In short, I used fill light, shadows, and saturation to varying degrees to get this picture.

This shot was taken with a Kodak EasyShare Z760. I was watching the snow outside my window one day when I spotted a hawk in the tree next to my apartment. I grabbed my camera and ran outside, but in my excitement forgot to put anything on my feet first. The hawk flew off just as soon as I stepped out, and I was left barefoot in the snow. Since my original target for a photo was gone, I figured I would just capture the humor of the moment.
