The Twilight Turns
"The twilight turns from amethyst
To deep and deeper blue,
The lamp fills with a pale green glow
The trees of the avenue.
The old piano plays an air,
Sedate and slow and gay;
She bends upon the yellow keys,
Her head inclines this way.
Shy thought and grave wide eyes and hands
That wander as they list -- -
The twilight turns to darker blue
With lights of amethyst.”
By James Joyce

In the gloomy sky the constellation Eridanus which starts at the foot of Orion is the river of fire which flows past Cetus and then to outer darkness is partial seen. In the cell the rat is eaten, the skeleton fish of Laodicea, the partially seen wooden cross crushes the serpents head, 10 hatch marks on the wall represent 10 reiterations of the golden rule - broken, the key is in plain site but not seen.

This is a painting of a garden in my mind ... a garden of love, of peace, of kindness ... It is twilight, the light and shadows are soft, the milky way and Ursa Major shine. This painting hangs on the wall beside my bed - it is the first sight I see in the morning and the last sight I see at night. In the garden of peace and all that is good - friendship, love, protection and good fortune - even death, part of life, is seen. The four pictorial radicals of the written Chinese word for "happiness, good fortune" are the picture symbols for: one, person, garden and Shang Ti (heavenly ruler) and literally define happiness as "one person in the garden with the heavenly ruler."

This painting was inspired by the verse, "...My Mother was a tailor woman, sewed my first blue jeans." from the House of the Rising Sun. I am currently working on the verse "My father was a gambling man down in New Orleans, and the only time a gambler's happy is when he is winning or he's - drunk."

This is a painting celebrating life and all it contains, the dark and the light, the good and the evil, the mysterious, our birth, our death, sky, buildings and earth .... The painting is named after the shown constellations and stars - from right to left in the sky: Virgo, the virgin bringing the beautiful seed and branch of life. Libra with the stars: Zuben al Genubi, "the price deficient"; Zuben al Chemali, "the price which covers"; Zuben Akrabi, "the price of the conflict". Representing conflict is Scorpio and Ophiucus. Scorpio with the stars: Antares, "the rival of Ares - Mars the planet of war"; Lesath, "the perverse - in the tail of the scorpion". Ophiucus, "the serpent held", with the stars: Saif, "the bruised"; Mageros, "contending", and Triophas, "treading underfoot".

When my grandfather immigrated from Poland to the United States (circa 1907) he came in through Ellis Island, NYC ... he had very little money, the boarding houses and streets were dangerous, so he searched for a safe place to sleep. He came upon a cemetery and he knew the dead could not hurt him. This painting depicts that scene, with my grandfather Joseph safely sleeping and the constellation Auriga, the good Shepard watching over him. The constellations: Orion, Taurus, Aries, Perseus, Gemini, Cancer, and Andromeda are also seen playing out the drama of good verses evil in the nighttime sky.

-Mother would sometimes go dancing and drinking for days at a time ... my wife tells me, of her childhood when their home was a trailer, when she and her brother would be left to care for the two younger children. When cereal and milk was the usual meal ... but sometimes there was no more milk. When the welfare money was gone, the dancing done and the drinking and beau no more, mother would return.
Now here rises Arieh, the Lion, who conquers the night sky; with shining bright star Denebola, the judge who comes, and brightest star Regulus, rendering Hydra, the snake the abhorred - judged by star Alphard, and sentenced to be vanquished and put out of the way. Crater, the cup of wrath spilled, and Corvus, raven, scavenger, bird of prey, with the star Minchar Alsugia, the deceiver torn to pieces.
But up ahead, to the right, there is light - Mother is forgiven and the deceiver is judged.
