There have been lively debates lately about rules, policies, etc. on Fine Art America.
Reading it all, I have been surprised that the focus of debate is about the specific rule or policy, and that a much larger point is being overlooked. And that larger point goes well beyond any single policy.

Hmmm. Interesting comment. Never thought of it. But yea, now that I understand your reference, I agree!

There are lots of private companies that do change their rules and policies due to "pressure" put on them by their customers to make a change. So, while I agree it is immature to have a tantrum about it, I can see why people do express their disagreements, and/or request for changes to policies. I do believe that there have been changes made based on reasonable input from customers here.

Oh Dan ..... you're so desperate, and sometimes you're trying too hard ... you certainly don't miss a single chance to get your name out, no matter what !!

"Oh Dan ..... you're so desperate ... you certainly don't miss a single chance to get your name out, no matter what !!"
Christine,
I hope you were joking about that. If not, it's somewhat, well..."trollish"
There was no attempt to "get my name out."
I am here to sell art. If I was going to do anything at all in the "promotional" arena, it would certainly be associated with my work, and images would be included. And it certainly would not be buried in an in-house blog on FAA.

LOL. Funny, but the same thought ran across my mind (and yes, I like mike).
But let's add to it JC.
You know, all those "desperate" people in the forums making too many posts.
You know, all those "desperate" people that basically sell every day.
Hahahaha ... to both of you :-)
You definitely know me too well, especially you, Dan ;-)
Anyway, I truly believe you're too good for this kind of threads and blog posts, Dan.

Christine,
Well, a little confused here. Don't know what you mean by that. I'm just a person who has always had the burden of speaking my opinion.

Besides, I can't post threads that contain images to promote myself because I'll get jumped on by Dan! LOL! (wink, wink dan)
Besides, I have grown tired of jousting at windmills. FAA has its problems, but it is a good place, I sell here, and it is comprised of some really great people.

"Besides, I can't post threads that contain images to promote myself because I'll get jumped on by Dan!"
I like the discussions. Look at the ground we've covered just today: masturbating women, advertising your work, rock 'n roll, photojournalism, license negotiations, suing the pants off people vs the golden rule, Adobe subscriptions. I get none of that in the image threads. Nada.

Of course it's a good place, Dan, and of course it's comprised of some really GREAT people.
Otherwise I would not be here.
But there is a fine line between great people and simple (and sometimes sick) exhibitionism, but obviously only I can see it. So just disregard my post.

@Christine
"but obviously only I can see it"
Sounds like the old "the whole world is wrong, but I'm right" philosophy.
Perhaps that's not the case. Perhaps the world is right and it is your perceptions that are flawed, skewed, and biased.
Actually, one of the biggest differences between FAA and much other private business web-space, is that even if you can't do whatever you want, you do get to, " flail your arms and legs about and throw a hissy fit," on the forum almost indefinitely. On most sales sites anything like a complaint is shut down pretty early on the forums. I think Sean must subscribe to the Dr. Spock method of child/artist raising. ;)

If you don't like the rules here - as I said to 19 year old boy child - the door is there - go make a place for yourself - and he did. Poor child has had his ups and downs with life - but which of us has not. I'm sure that there are printers that are only too willing to take on a new venue and make some more money off of your ruleless POD site.
and to each of us - the whole world IS wrong and we are right. but most often - we have to just grin and bare it.

"Why You Can't Do What You Want On Fine Art America"
Now Dan, that depends on what you want to do does it not? many of FAA members do exactly what they want to do on FAA.
BTW, your blog is right on target:)

Hello Dan, I call it expressing yourself, freedom of speech as long as the comments remain in context. I joined in October I think and there were a few discussion threads and some of my comments where zapped! I can not help but laugh because I remember saying once the discussion threads some of them reminded me of the old aol chat forums.....
Oh, cool, an image sharing thread...
This is my latest, please buy it now.
This is specifically for the censors, as she is nude and I will be adding porn to the keywords, and for Roger, because he will see I have not yet acknowledged the sculptor but I am trying to figure out who did it and where it is from....
Did I mention I will give a 1% discount?
Michael - No one is preventing you from speaking your mind or infringing on you freedom of speech in the real world. However, it doesn't extend to you here. You agreed upon joining that you'd abide by the rules, a place you're choosing to be. Freedom of speech doesn't apply here. Just like if you were at the movies and felt you had the right to yell "Fire" or worse "Gun." But if you think that's your right, go and do it and then get back to me on how well that works for you.

Roseann, that is an excellent point, and you are very correct on that one....as long as comments abide by the rules. I understand that completely, I have gotten alot of good pointers no question about that, and I have also LMAO!
@Dan I appreciate your discussion thread!
I was very lucky much to the original members disgust (not all thankfully) that Sean gave me carte blanche on running the discussions and social areas.
That stands today and yes, temper tantrums and hissy fits do tend to stay open for a certain time as it shows more about the person having the tantrum and not so much about the site.
However, there are just some things that are not allowed and they are mainly common sense.
If you are in Marks and Spencers you do not take off your clothes and strut your stuff showing your meat and two veg to all the customers as security would soon have you in a strongehold and probably waiting in the back room for the police. In the same way, I delete nude avatars or, in the case of one gentleman, his meat and two veg dangling for all to see.
If you are in an art gallery, yes, you do expect nudes. Nudes are on display and most nudes are not covered, nor do they get frowned on or complaints.
Genitalia does. If I want to see your wee willy winkle or the ladies bits and pieces, I will remove the safe filter. If I do not, then I will not, and am happy.
As for sexual content..... I am not really interested either way as I ran an adult site way back when. I have seen it all. But, other people do NOT want to see it and, if they do not then they have a nice filter to warn them not to look. If they do want to see it then they just remove the filter.
Use your common sense and everyone is happy. If you are still pushing the boat then you are just an ass and will be treated like one by me
Simples
(The you in my last bit was to anyone doing said thing.....not you as in you in the thread)

That's okay, Michael. I'm glad you're amused. I am too. I figure you're just a very blissful person.

Speaking of rules, run a search for food porn and check out that last image, it shows nothing technically but is not for the faint of heart...
Oh, and next time you are in my house while my wife is away discretely snapping images like that I would be happy to sign a model release....
I think that common courtesy escapes many people. They feel that it's their "right" to force feed people whatever they want because it's art. I mean if you really feel that way then display your work in a public place, in a large city, during lunch time, in a high traffic area. Or you can even put up your own website and display it there. Rent gallery space and display it there.
Why is it so important to force a site to change it's rules to suit you?
Actually, many site providers now have it in the contract that you will not have porn or 'art porn' on the site at all or it will be removed.
Adult sites are strictly looked at and have to be on specific servers meant for them. There was a thing whereby you had to purchase a special domain extension like .adult (it was not that but something along those lines) but I think that did not go very well.
Some providers do not allow porn or adult sites at all
Google penalises them and I was not allowed here using the English 'Cloud' until they were contacted and asked to see what the site was, because of the keywords being used here
You do have to be careful and so there are rules.
These people breaking them ruin it not just for themselves but, for all of us trying to sell our prints

Addressing the original start of the discussion. Any reasonable adult cannot complain about boundaries on a private site. It's just commen sense. Well said Dan.

(I am sorry. I am so, so sorry. I mean, come on... how could anybody resist a wide open opportunity like that. LOL.)

Allen,
Off topic, but here's another one for you. Beth (Err, excuse me,), I mean IFAS and I had a private email conversation once. I had made a joke about somebody's lunchbox. And I meant literally "lunchbox" as in sandwich, fruit, and a soda. Come to find out, in GB a "lunchbox" is a man's package! Go figure!
Thanks, JC. LOL Sorry, thought just popped in my head. How long these people would last in basic.
Beth/Abbie - screw woman! Give me a name to work with here! LOL Seriously, how would you like to be called? I think this escapes these folks along with common sense and courtesy. Some of us feel there's more to art than just "shock or controversy." I remember when I first saw the story on the art gallery that booked an exhibit where the room(s) were filled with trash and urinated on. And people paid to see that. I can see that in most large cities in the poor areas. Why would I pay to see something that is supposed to "shock" me but is otherwise pointless and screams "I lack any real creativity so this is the best I could come up with?"
@Roseann
"I lack any real creativity so this is the best I could come up with?" *
That is a D--- good point. Kinda' like a stand-up comedian who lacks any real talent to write something truly funny, so he builds his act on total profanity, lewdness and shock. Yes, it works for some audiences, but underneath it all he is still a talentless hack.
(* Roseann was talking about other artists, not herself.)

@JC - I am now warped for life after viewing that image. Kind of like the wardrobe failure at the superbowl a few years ago LOL, millions of unsuspecting children, who were probably breast fed, will never be the same after that incident. They were severely traumatized...
On the other hand, I like that "room full of trash" analogy. Art? No, more like Ho Hum...

I was once told on another photo site a woman described my photo with the spanish word for Veg. as posted by Abbie. As an example I have posted my photo of forks here in this forum..., in the instance on the other site because of what the other artist commented about my submission generated so much attention from her comment, the photo attained the recognition it deserved. My comment was it was a form of advertising and advertising is a form of commercial art or a photo, it generates business, without it where would the economy be globally....I have not heard that expression in many years we would say here in New Orleans All meat and no potatoes......lol
here is the photo in question......

banned forever from google plus, but seeing as i didn't stop getting sales, anything that i got must have been a coincidence. they gave me a vague list of rules of what it might have been so who knows what it was. i remember getting into an argument with one person there, banned her, and for all i know she complained and it went down then. no idea, and no way to correct my actions. oh well.

"@Dan, personally I think all your discussion threads have certainly brought anot of interest to you personally, a potential client may see them and may generate more business than you can imagine....."
LOL. You've got a great sense of humor, Michael! LOL!
Seriously... I do not do it for sales. Yes, there may be some help here on FAA, but I remain convinced that potential buyers do not spend time looking at groups, reading forum posts, etc. People don't have time. If somebody wants an image for their new beach house, they jump on an art site, enter "lighthouse" into the search, do the transaction, and get on with their life.
I honestly believe that more can be accomplished if time and effort is spent in promotions outside of FAA. Any time spent here is probably better spent elsewhere.
That is why I asked about the benefits of forum posting in a thread created days before this one. I am not convinced many buyers have the desire, nor the time, to read these forums. If they are interested in any particular artist(s), they would be more likely to read the artist's blog to learn more about them, than they would be searching thru a forum looking for random posts here and there.
@Mike that always is in the back of my mind, someone with your high standards and reputation as a superior artist because of a rule that just seems unjust and seems somehow can be reversed...FAA promotes me on Facebook, and I download my work for everyone to see there.....and other have promoted me on google, but I fear of self promoting my work there because of your experience with them.....its baffling.....you would think they would have something like amnesty.....

Allen the Britts can not take claim for that wording, but people in Mississippi USA used that expression many many many years ago, and it was punn used by happy people men or women, all meat and no potatoes, or all potatoes and no meat...lol it was a polite thing to say when in public......where exactly that expression originated who knows but its been used commonly among gay and straight friends I know........instead of being obscene or valgar in public....

'Meat and two veg' has replaced 'twig and berries' as my favorite euphemism!
I'm relatively new to the forums, but I don't see an issue with someone promoting themselves and trying to stay relevant and visible on a site that is designed to help artists promote themselves, stay relevant and visible. Just an observation. *shrug*

May we keep this to a slightly sensible thread. It actually has some good points I do not want lost in jokes.

John,
Go start your own website or blog or something. Anything.
I'm not offended by nudity, or sex, or masturbation. I've been known to engage in all three. But I'm here to sell and my paintings don't go with pornography. That's a different audience. And this site is not it.
Shock art is usually more shock than art. Anyone can make a picture of shiting on the Bible, the Koran, on the a statue of Buddha. I could take a photo of my husband's penis, but it wouldn't be art, just a snap shot. It takes no skill to shock and one depiction is no more shocking than another and rarely more artful. Anyone can do a crotch shot with or without a stimulating hand. If one isn't any better than another, it ain't art. Mapplethorpe, was a brilliant photographer, whether shooting flowers or kinky gay sex. But there was a hell of a lot more there than shock to his images. They were brilliantly composed and beautiful There was skill involved beyond the shock. But it still wouldn't belong here outside the anti porn screen. People have a right to choose what they want to see. They may well want to see Mapplethorpe, but they don't deserve to have Mapplethorpe thrust upon them.
Take it where people expect to see it. Grow up.

John - If all rules are meant to be broken please go to the nearest movie theatre, buy a ticket and go into the movie. Wait about a half hour after the movie has started and either yell "fire" or "gun." Let me know how breaking that rule works out for you.
