Why are they doing it for photos again? I thought the next one was for paintings. I was looking forward to the painting contest. Are they ever going to have one for us poor painters who have waited and waited for our turn?

Roy, there will be a lot of people that reach it; there were last year anyway.

There will be groups that pop up on Facebook and it will probably reach a fever pitch which will also introduce a lot of new artists to FAA.

If I recall, there were two or three hundred that got to the second round last year and some artists did it with multiple images. It is a lot of work but could be well worth it. I just don't have the time this year and even if I made it to the second round, it could look bad if I won as a moderator so I am going to enter three for exposure but will not be chasing votes.

There is nothing in the rules that say that the photos cannot be 'digitally manipulated'....

I do have a question if the admin of this contest peeks in: Paintings are entered and they aren't manipulations, they are true paintings. When does the filtering begin? Also, what happens if no one gets 250 votes? Do you just take the 10 (or whatever) highest number of votes?

Louise, there will definitely be many who will get 250 votes. Last year, there was quite a nice collection of photos that moved over to the 2nd Round of Juried voting. It takes a lot of work and a lot of sharing votes with each other and getting friends and family to help vote as well.

I actually like Ovation TV's way better-they just went through a few artists' pages and chose what they wanted for their commercials. Although I put my three up, I know they don't have a snowball's chance in hell because I don't have 500 close friends that'll vote. But someone who put up a crooked snapshot might have 500 friends who will gladly help them out.

I didn't enter last year, but I did this one. I posted on FB, Twitter and G+ but not getting a lot of response yet. Thank you to those who did vote! One thing I am running into is with those who I sent the notice to by email from my contact list. I am getting emails back saying "they want me to sign up for something, etc.", and "I'm not on FB and won't ever be, so I can't vote". I think I remember running into this the last time, too. Unfortunately, that keeps a lot of people from voting because they either don't like FB, don't think they can sign up for an account on FAA because they aren't an artist/photographer, or it takes too much time to go through the process. Nevertheless, I am going to push it with all I have and look forward to positive results. :-)

I went through all of the images that are up - I was amazed at the quality and perfection of many - and disappointed at the number of just poor images. But worse - the number of people that have put up images that are not photographs.

Maybe I'm missing the point here, but shouldn't y'all be voting for what you think is wonderful or moving or unique instead of doing people a favor? There is some really great stuff in there and some equally bad-it would be a damned shame and make FAA look foolish if work was included that was horribly done but got a truckload of votes because of favoritism.

FAA is trying to get their members to advertise FAA while promoting their own work. This helps the members get their work noticed and helps FAA gain new buyers and sellers in the process. So it should be a win-win for both. They only want those who are very serious about promoting their working making it into the finals. Just because an image makes it to the finals doesn't mean it will be in the commercial. This just means those images at or above 250 votes when the contest ends, will be considered for the Jury vote. A jury will select a few images from all those that reached or exceeded 250 to determine which will be in the commercial. So poor quality images will never make it into the commercial, no matter how many votes they receive. I actually made a couple sales while promoting my images last year.

Shane: It's the only reason I put any in-to get them seen. Granted, there is still a month to go for submissions but because of that, I feel the best works will get lost in the sea and not get their required numbers due to popularity of the submitter, so what is left is the best of who got their numbers.
That's why, as I said before, I like OvationTV's way. Submit the work and jurors choose, no popularity votes. /toots own horn-I've won 3 of their Art Race competitions; had it gone by popular votes, that would not have happened. And the work I had in one of their commercials I didn't even submit, they went through the site. A friend actually had to tell me about it when she saw it on tv!
There are folks here not reading what the "contest" is and submitting paintings and getting votes (and no, they aren't manips, they are paintings). No one is, so far at least, removing those, so the field is unnecessarily larger than it should be. I understand the particulars and the logistics of going through a site of a few million to find commercial-worthy pieces. I would just feel so bad for anyone who had really outstanding images but didn't get decent recognition for them. (No, not me! I voted for some fantastic and unique stuff and was voter #1 on a couple. Saddened me.)

I agree with your thoughts. The same thing happened last year and hardly anyone had 250 friends and family that would vote for them. It was disappointing to see so many excellent images not even get close to the vote count necessary to make it into the Jury round.

Last year a facebook group called "Get 250" was started to help people reach their goal. There is no way on earth I would have reached 250 without participating in that group. That group is active again this year for those who are interested.

This is my 1st post to any of the discussion forums here and it's as good a place as any for my 1st post. Joined August last year and never got around to uploading anything until last Sunday and already had my first sale (10 cards), off to a good start I guess.

I am a photographer and have been doing royalty free sales for about 3 years and figured it's time to see if any of my print work will sell. Food imagery has been my main focus for royalty free stuff and since I live in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California I do a lot of nature type images but have just let them sit on my hard drive, now it's time to see if the public likes my work.

For the question: "I thought a contest should be about the best image" ... it is not. None of the FAA contests (as well as many other contests these days) are truly about quality, they are about publicity. So if you embrace the true purpose of the contests, they can be a tool to get your work seen. It is all about bringing people to FAA and creating a buzz in the social media about FAA... Maybe we will also be lucky and have a great image actually win.. lol -

Some tips learned last year: -
push for one image at a time, make sure you have at least a 50 point (or more) cushion before you start on your second image because the votes can be revoked and drop you down below 250 before you are recognized by the contest as having reached the desired number (and put on the sacred list).

Do not drive your valued contacts crazy with requests to vote- also maybe it is inappropriate/immature to ask certain contacts - point is:be sure the solicitation to vote is appropriate.
Integrity is important - last contest there were "tells" as to who was revoking votes and re-voting for their own gain (how immature - remain professional and adult about it all).

I am sure others can add their experience to this list!!
