When I first joined FAA, I found the chat section and recognized someone so requested a chat just to test it out. I wanted to be familiar with everything I could here. Since then I've never gone back to it and have never been asked to chat with someone else. It might be useful if you had something you wanted to learn or talk about. Something you knew would require back and forth communication quickly. Facebook has it. It's of course another way to socialize (chat), and we know there are plenty of people that hunger for that opportunity.
