Marketing Questions/no Sales Pitch

1) I probably look for new ones a couple times a year, but when I first started using them I looked for them weekly at least. I just have a lot of them now. I also photography interesting texture images to use as textures on my photos.
2) I'm usually looking more for a texture change. I do like painterly textures and use them quite often.
3) I have about 5 go to textures that I use the most, but I combine textures too.
4) No, don't use texture brushes
5) I would say I have a mix of both, but I mostly use pretty high quality/resolution ones
6) I have purchased most of my textures on sale. When I first started I bought some Florabella Texture packs (which were less than they are now) and Paint the Moon. Also have some Totally Rad Dirty Pictures (which is a photoshop plugin you can use that shows you what different textures will look like on your image without actually opening each texture file and applying them)
7) I don't need any tutorials, but I know I did when I first started uses them a few years back.

Oh, a suggestion. It would be nice if you put your initials like fall-texture-1-jm.jpg or possibly use jean in the name. This lets people who use your textures easily figure out where they got them if they want to suggest them to other people. So use the same initials or "jean" or whatever you decide in all your texture names that you plan to share or sell. (like Paint the Moon has PTM in her texture file name.)

Kay, Thank You for taking the time to answer. What an awesome suggestion about putting my initials or name in the texture titles. I had not thought of that. You are right, doing that would remind a person where they got the texture from.

Great questions Jean. (I also like the suggestion that Kay made on IDing the particular texture in reference).
1) I used to spend once a week looking for textures but I have enough for the amount of texture work that I do that I don't spend more than once a year now.
2) I am most interested in texture change. But I will combine different textures to get the color adjustment as well.
3) I have about a dozen textures that I use the most but will use all that I have depending on the work. I have an inventory of 100.
4) I have not used texture brushes.
5) I have a few lower quality textures but I am fussy about the quality so prefer high quality textures. Lower quality textures don't achieve the same results...in my opinion.
6) Mine are all free (with credit to the author as applied to the website)
7) Initially I used a couple of tutorials but now just go with how it feels. To me, you have to have the right image to combine with the right textures to achieve the results desired. So it turns out to be more trial and error at that point.

1. Coincidentally, I was just looking for new textures when your request came through! However, I would say I usually go looking a couple of times a year, if that. I was just trying to track down a texture that I used in a low-res image so I could re-do it in a larger size so down the rabbit hole I went, looking at dozens of textures. Now I'm more in the mood for getting a new collection together.

2.I mostly look for color change and texture change. I often combine two or three textures. I definitely enjoy painterly textures and would like to incorporate more of those. I'd especially like to see more textures with heavy brush strokes.

3. I'd say I have about a dozen textures that I use over and over.

4. I haven't used texture brushes yet but that's a good idea!

5. A mix of both but it's fine by me if they're out of focus in places...often that makes for an even more interesting look.

6. I've probably spent a total of $100-$150 over four years or so.

I use textures a lot so here are my answers to your questions.

1) I look for textures two to three times a week as I try out different ones on each image until I'm satisfied with the result.
2) I look for a variety of textures. Grungy ones for my random still life, painterly ones for maybe a flower image or shaded pastel textures for more delicate flower images etc.
3) I have about 5 - 6 go to textures that I find work best. Sometimes I combine textures but I'm always looking for something different.
4) I don't use texture brushes.
5) I have mostly good quality but also some not-to-good. I prefer the better quality ones. Because I take photos of quite a large variety of subjects I always try to have a fair sized library of textures.
6) I have a mixture of free textures and some that I have purchased. To date I haven't spent too much money on them but I have recently seen some excellent textures that I would love to have but are quite expensive. Giving it some serious thought at the moment. I don't use Photoshop but some lesser priced programmes.
7) I don't need tutorials at present but maybe if I started to use Photoshop I would be glad of some help.

I agree with Kay about putting a reference to yourself in the texture titles. I have some with just numbers and can't remember where they came from.

4. Haven’t a clue about texture brushes. I am self taught and there is a lot I don’t know.
5. It really depends on the effect I want. I am all over the map as far as personal style is concerned.
6. Early on, I spent money on textures once. I don’t like buying things for my computer on the internet. I would rather have a hard copy. I goof things up too often and I don‘t want to have to get in touch with the company I bought them from. I also enjoy making my own.
7. Tutorials would be a great benefit esp. how to get certain effects.

1. I look maybe 4 times a year and I get email notices from different places letting me know when they have new textures.

Peggy I'm glad I caught you at the right time. As a digital fine artist and the loss of my Painter Essentials program, now I only use Photoshop CS4, I was constantly trying to find the thick brush stroke texture. After a year of experimenting I finally have a few custom brushes I made that give me that old master's style brush stroke. I've made a few texture sheets with these. I will be coming out with a collection of twenty new textures in the next few weeks. Ten of these have heavy brush strokes in them.

I will be giving out a free texture once a month for 2013 for those that join my email list, some will be exclusive to email subscribers and some will be from the collection. You can join here. I would love you input on textures you would like to see developed.

I see most do not use texture brushes. I brought it up due to a friend saying he could not find very many textures in the larger formats that he works. He often cuts the texture up and places it. I thought why not a brush. Which leads to another question.

Do any of you use seamless textures? I often find that even when they are seamless there is still some pattern to them.

1) I probably don't look for new textures more than a couple times a year.
2) I mainly look for texture change. I like the painterly ones also.

1. But I'm always happy to find something new.

2. I like a large variety as I've found what woks on one image doesn't on another.

Great conversation - it must be, because I have learned a lot. I guess I have been doing this all wrong, but that is part of the fun of being new at things. I have used the occasional Photoshop texture when I want a canvas look, but have frequently been using textures I photographer – walls, grass cuttings, gold leaf on a Buddha… sometime layered together. It never occurred to me to find textures online. I’d feel very amateurish at the moment, but now I get to go play with the textures from Jean (thank you so much), so I’ll get over it quickly.

1. I generally try to be aware of textures while out photographing. Only recently have I used texture made by others.

2. For me its mostly painterly effect although I like blending color textures other colors in a photo

2. I use photoshop elements and love the watercolor filter, but don't always like the effect that it has and have not figured out how to make changes. I love putting in the textures from the elements artistic menu, and appreciate being able to see how using the sliders effects the photos.

Hi Jean. I thank-you for the textures, I'm going to pick them up after I answer some of your questions.
I love playing around with different filters and textures. I usually go at least once a week or every two weeks to look for new ones. Lately I've been trying to find painted textures..they look so neat.
Texture brushes, I've not had much luck with.
I have just a few that seem to be "go to" textures.
I agree though, please put your name with the textures so I can remember where they come from..this way you can also get credit. Many I have I would love to share or at least let people know where I got it, and so many don't have their names with them.
I use a mixture of hi quality and lo quality brushes..when using them on photos, after you use all the layers, it's hard to tell if they are lower quality or not..at least that's my opinion.

I'm open to just about any type of texture. It's kind of funny, because I'm a photographer, but when I texturize, I always try to make my images have a painterly look to them. Maybe that's because even though I'd love to paint, I'm just not good at it!!

I have a couple I use for the most part, and one in particular that I like and use frequently.

Being new to most of this, I didn't know there were texture brushes, so no, I don't use texture brushes.

2. TEXTURE, QUALITY, SIZE. I use mostly painterly type textures...I use to use "grunge" but they just don't fit my style right now.

5. High quality bar none...if you shoot with a FF camera and the image quality and size can't be size up to accommodate your image...then your texture wasn't worth you money!

I think as we evolve as artist our style changes. I personally don't use others textures that aren't painterly or a true texture...I don't care for images that have been blurred to appear as a texture. Brushes and overlays are wonderful if they are of high quality. Hope this helps you out.

1. How often do you look for a new kind of texture to use? When I first started out, it was almost daily - all free. Now I look around maybe 3-4x a year, mostly. I also make a lot of my own textures via photographs - so that I do daily!

2.What is it you are looking for: I generally look for a complementary color, and sometimes a subtle color change. LOVE paint strokes & painterly look. I often use multiple layers on an image and often light & dark together. Truthfully, I look for it all. Sometimes I know exactly the look & feel I want when I start out, sometimes its an evolution.

3. How many go-to textures do you use? I have a group of favorites that I "hit" first, about 25 of them. Although I suspect I have hundreds of textures overall - can't have too many!

4. Do You use texture brushes as well as texture sheets? Mostly sheets, haven't tried brushes - but they might work better than what I sometimes do which is masking and/or erasing within a texture.

5. Which is of greatest benefit to your texture library. When I first started out I had mostly low-quality textures (free ones generally are) - and while they can sometimes be good for that really grainy look, they don't have the quality I'm starting to "need" as I continue working textures. Currently I'm mostly using high-res textures.

I bit the bullet & bought Flypaper Textures earlier this year - I think the entire bundle, with discount was $299? I debated doing it for months, but I really wanted high-res files. That was the first time I've spent any $$ on textures.

7. Would tutorials on how to use textures be of benefit to you? Probably texture brushes, tips on combining textures & "recipes." IMO though, there's always something to be learned, especially if I think I already know how!

It would be great to have textures with unique names to identify where they came from, i.e. who made them.

1. I'm very sporadic when it comes to working with textures. I normally work with them when I'm bored of doing my normal work. So, it might be six times a year or so. I will also shoot my own textures when I'm out and see something I think will work.

2. I do look for painterly textures and I have one that I have used a number of times. Other than that it seems like different images call for different types of textures. I look for what I think will fulfill my vision for any given image. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

3. I seem to have four or five texture images that I've used on more than one occasion.

4. I'm admitting my ignorance but I don't know how o use a texture brush. I'm assuming texture sheet is a texture image but I could be wrong.

5. I'm not sure that blurry and out of focus texture is a bad thing. It seems to add to the atmosphere of the final image. However, if I'm creating one myself I normally take care to keep it in focus and high quality. I can always blur,,, etc. the texture later on.

6. I don't spend money on them. I either create them myself or use some friends have created.

7. I have used tutorials before. Obviously I should take a few more since I know nothing about texture brushes.

I've only been using textures seriously for a short time. I've experimented here and there through the years, but most of my portfolio has been straight photography and HDR up until the past month or so.

1. I shoot a bunch of textures when I'm in the mood to do photography but don't have any interesting ideas or subjects to shoot. If I'm working on a photo and need a certain type of texture I'll created it or look for one to use online. I don't frequently look for textures, I guess.

2. I'm usually looking for a quality change. Something to give the image a grunge look, or to add some drama to a boring sky. If need be I turn the texture grayscale before using, but sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised with the color change they offer.

3. I've got two that I always go to first, if they aren't happening...I've got a whole folder full of candidates.

4. I've never tried texture brushes. I think I will since you mentioned them!

5. I like a mix of both. I tend to use the higher quality ones more though.

6. I've spent nothing as of yet, on textures or brushes.

7. I love internet tutorials so, yes!

I've only occasionally used textures but am now beginning to get more serious about them. Taking a ho-hum picture that I like and giving it a huge change is basically what I'm after. If I get into a mood to create something specific, then I'm on a search to find exactly the look I want. I don't have much in the line of specific "go to" textures yet but I'm sure that will come. I have tried a texture brush and can see their usefulness for specific applications. I would be interested in more high quality textures than "stuffing a file" with mediocre and low-quality textures. I haven't bought any textures yet but I might in the future. Tutorials are usually my last resort!!! I love working by trial and error and sometimes come up with something nicer than what I was originally shooting for. Also, my hubby is a retired electrical engineer, loves computers/software, and will help me figure out things that confuse me. He will look at an internet tutorial long before I will, however I have looked at them occasionally. I much prefer things to be written down and not have to rely on my brain to remember what I saw.

1) Usually about once a week, maybe twice, depends on what ideas I am having about a few images I have I think would like a texture for.
2) Am an artist too so I do like painterly textures and have shot my own as well and will look for them, as well as all kinds of textures. Sometimes I want a lot of change and sometimes not, depends on the photo, as I am doing more photography now.
3) I have about 50 at this point, but I continually look for more.
4) Want to experiment with texture brushes when I get time to do it!
5) I like high quality textures, occasionally will look for something lower quality to enhance a look I am going for but very rare.
6) I have purchased only a couple of textures so far, the rest are a few free with no credit needed and most that I use I appreciate and give credit to the person that designed them.
7) Tutorials are always great, but most so far I know how to do and have done tutorials for in the past. Always looking to learn!!

Hey, I am coming in to this discussion very late....but I think I've read enough to understand the questions.

1. I look for textures only occassionally.
2. Most of my textures are taken by me with a Mark 1 Canon or my Nikon. I look for subtle variations in surface texture as well as color. I use textures in pretty much all of my work. Most final 'textures' are a fusion of up to 10 images with various color and other manipulations.
3. I have well over 100 textures, but like the those who have already commented, I tend to use more of some because they just work.
4. I also make texture brushes. In fact I make patterns and brushes as these layers, when blended can be very effective. I use photoshop CS for my work and as I said, most of my images include over 20+ blended textures with manipulation and blending.
5. All of my textures are pretty high quality. If you use a texture of low qualtiy (say 70 dpi) and work it into a 300 dpi image the final result will pixilate on you so it is not a good idea.
6. I do not purchase textures as very few I've seen fit my needs.
7. I've been doing this texture work for over 10 years (I have trademarked it as fusion photography - see wikipedia) and have not relied on tutorials....but I have taken digital art courses. I also buy photoshop and imagine magazines (or read through them at the bookstore) for ideas. Also some of my best material comes from textures within paintings that I am allowed to photograph at art galleries or art museums.

I have no idea if this will help others or whether I will receive your 'filters' but thanks for the opportunity to express myself. Jeff

1. I have a large collection of textures, some are my own but most have been collected when offered as free by their creators. I do have some that I've paid for. I keep my texture files on a separate hard drive, in separate folders so I can attribute them when the opportunity arises. I use my textures for commercial work. How often do I look for new textures? Hard to answer that, I'm always looking for something new, but might do a specific search 4 times a year.

2. I look for all of the things you've mentioned including painterly textures. Colour is important, I know I can change it but the creative process flows more easily if I have something close to what I think might give the effect I'm looking for. Often use two or three textures layered together.

3. I have roughly 200 files in my texture library. Always adding more.

4. No, never used brushes.

5. Always use high quality textures and will delete any poorer ones.

6. Most have been free, but have spent perhaps $40 in the last 6 months.

7. Tutorials are always good BUT I don't use Photoshop so I may pick up an idea and experiment how to create something similar in Gimp.

1. I am constantly on the watch for good textures. I always take advantage of free texture offers such as this (Thanks again!) and I have several texture artists whose work I am subscribed too as well. I am in one club that a particular artist has. It's a pay monthly club (minimal fee) and receive all of his new work that month. I'm sort of a texture hoarder. I probably have 1000 but should also do some "spring cleaning" because I probably only use about 50. But I love to mix them!

2. I look for something that grabs me! Colors and size are probably the best. I like unique. I have way to many grunge textures so I I look for more bright, light, and translucent textures to brighten things up a bit.

3. Once I get hooked on one it's like a habit. If I had to guess, I probably use 50 over all but an addicted to about 12-15.

4. I have never used texture brushes.

5. I think my great benefit is that I have some of both. I do mix them quite frequently and I also may use a small one in only a certain section. I like having all types.

6. The majority of my textures are free but I've recently discovered creativemarket.com and I have been purchasing several must have textures/overlays here. I also follow particular artists and may purchase their sets or newly released work.

7. I would use tutorials, especially on brushes. My problem is I do not use Photoshop. Gasp! I know...I've heard I'm not a professional if I don't have Photoshop but I'm just not interested so I always look for overlays and other tools that will help me.

1) Not at all. I made a huge search a couple of years ago, and I still use the textures I found back then. I have been in contact with the creators and have their permission to use their textures. About a year ago I started making my own textures as I want my work to be 100% me..

2) When I did my huge texture search, I basically looked for painted textures, in all styled but was most interested in the vintage ones. I also do combine pained textures with my photo textures.

1. I have a large collection of textures, some are my own but most have been collected when offered as free by their creators. I do have some that I've paid for
2. I look for style, color and quality in a texture especialy I do like painterly effects
3. I Always use high quality textures.
4. I do not use (yet) texture brushes much but would love to learn more about them.
5. I prefer high quality textures.
6. I have not spent a lot of money on textures, I try to purchase them on sale or find free ones. I have even created a few myself.
7. I do watch tutorials, there is always something new to learn.

1. I have to say, I have so many textures at this point, that i don't go looking for them. But ... that having been said, I am on a lot of blog subscriptions and when some come my way, I always look!!

2. I would say for me, the purpose of texture overlays is as much for mood as anything. It's really a function of the particular image ... it tells me what it wants.

3. I have about a dozen favorites, but a library of ... quite a few!!!!!

4. No, not really.

5. I have a mix. Some of my all-time favorites are quite small.

6. I have a few favorite artists that I have been happy to spend $$ on for their lovely textures. I don't think I've spent much more than $20.00 at a go, though. Or at least, not much more than that.

7. Um, I don't think so?? But I'm always happy to learn something new or see how someone else does it!!!!

... Jean, if I may be so bold as to suggest ... put your final image into Photoshop ... go to File ... scroll down to File Info ... and add your name and main website and email address ... then click ok. Then go up to File ... Save As ... and put your name or at least your initials in the title.

I personally consider any photographic artwork I upload that includes someone else's textures to be a collaboration, of sorts, and unless I've forgotten who the texture came from or just plain goofed up ... I think the creator of the texture should be credited where its possible to do so.

Answeres to your questions.
1) I will look several times a week, but not real long each time I look.
2) What I look for is well depends my mood I guess. If I see something that I like I will try it.
3) I would say 5 to 7 that I use more then others.
4) I never have used texture brushes. I’m willing to try. Just have to learn how to use them.
5) High quality. Sometimes using lower quality the output isn’t all that great.
6) I have spent no money, but at times I have thought about it. Really just getting into this.
7) Would love tutorials and I feel it would be a great benefit to me and my photos.

I see so many beautful pieces of work in this group that it makes me want to learn more on this subject.

1. I look every so often. I'm on a site that sends out free textures once a week but I'm not downloading them like I used to, they are starting to all look alike!
2. I look for color change, texture change and quality change. I've started deleting many of my textures for these reasons.

4. I've never used texture brushes but would love to try them, along with a tutorial on how to use them! :-)

1. I just did purchase a set of textures. However, in my 6 or 7 years of practicing photography, that was the first time I'd ever done so. I've been pretty content with the textures that came with Photoshop.

2. I prefer to use texture modifications.

3. I have 3 or four "go-to" textures.

4. All my textures are sheets

5. I prefer fewer, higher quality textures.

6. As I stated previously, I rarely spend money on textures.

7. I often enjoy tutorials on anything photography related.

1. Once or twice a year. So far I have only used textures that I created myself. I have quite an extensive library of photographic textures.

2. Texture change. I haven't looked for painterly textures. I'm looking forward to giving yours a try to see if it works for me.

7. I prefer to just experiment, since I am quite good with Photoshop.

I do look for painterly textures but still need good quality and large file size. Color is also important.

It is more important for me to have fewer, but higher quality.
