Some observations on your painting “Agathism”.
At first glance it looks like decorative pieces of color here and there, but
upper left corner, it is target hit, fragments scattered? The figure on the left is holding
a gun which looks like it has just been fired from the position of it. He is keeping her at arms’
length. The composition has a big empty square on the bottom, centered, a gulf between them.
They are separated on the canvas as much as possible, he to the right, with his back against the wall, you
could say. She to the extreme right, exposed. I’ll leave it at that, moving on… You have further
separated them, literally, by choosing to use a diptych. Further again, when in one picture you
photographed the two pieces a good distance apart. You didn’t make it easy to view. They were
photographed together only when asked? At least one image I remember they were apart. So their
relationship isn’t seamless, obviously, it’s coming apart at the seams, in the diptych. It’s interesting you
chose to paint this in a cubist style, things are fragmented and distorted.
I think you had posted on your site a pink toned version and a blue one, probably a photography
problem. I’m relying on memory here.
Blue is a nice color, but might be seen as gloomy here. In the scene depicted I might have expected
discordant or intense color. Did you make these as conscious choices, or did you just paint, as
you say you do? Also, you're not just baiting baiting viewers here, using provocative imagery, are you? Your work is
scattered a bit in style and subject. Some of it has some nice color harmony.
It has a strong graphic quality. Your line work, especially, has a frenetic energy to it.
Some pieces look older in style, like older ‘50s, ‘60s political/propaganda type posters. Was that the look you
intended? You have some nice pieces on your site.
Other thoughts were offered, I know, on other than just picture making. I don’t know if you were looking
for just that.
