you can like what you want, i'm just saying that the site won't print the images if they are, or look noisy.

Alot of those images were shot at night/dusk so they will be a bit grainy. But pictures of things at night are usually taken at night. A few of those images I had to reduce the file size in order to meet the upload limit but all of them are just under 25 MB at 24MP. My next lens will be a bigger light gathering one, perhaps a 1.4 or so. I seem to be able to photograph at night mostly, after shows. But I`m still going to like the pictures I like, though.

it's not that they can't make it, what does it look like after it's printed. because if someone got an image and it was reticulated, looked really noisy up close, they would return it. no matter how faithful the intention. if you bought it yourself you would know what your getting. but a buyer doesn't know that. the site can make a large image, but if it looks noisy, it won't be printed at all.

Dpi doesn't mean a thing, it's megapixels that are important and you should upload the highest resolution that you have without resizing. FAA will print them the size that is ordered as long as the image is good enough quality. There seems to be a trend in photography today to eliminate as much grain and/or noise as possible in images. I don't know why some of your images appear so grainy unless your iso was set very high for night shots. You should always use the lowest iso possible and a tripod.

Turns out, the local print shop (http://www.cityprinting.com/html/wide.html) can do 64in prints and larger and have no problem with my files at 240dpi. They can do canvas as well. This printer they use can do 1440dpi (http://www.mutoh.com/valuejet-1624.php) And the cost is comparable. Of coarse they don`t frame it but other shops around here will. It`s nice to have it done all in one place and internet accessible and all but if I have to post pix at half the resolution I feel is needed to produce a quality, clear and sharp as per my intention print at 60in by 40in well...does`nt seem like a good idea to me. Yea...I know it`s free for me to be here but if you expect me to modify my art/photographic visions (hallucinations!) so as to accommodate some printing shortcomings well don`t hold your breath. Don`t get me wrong, I like this site. But I`m not gonna shoot at a third of the dpi`s I can just to get it printed here. You know how easy it is to reduce the dpi`s of a print? Real easy. Why can`t ArtAmerica reduce it to what they need when they print it? I`d rather reduce it than increase it. They should realize not everyone here is shooting on iPhones.

I think what I`m gonna do is order a few of my prints and see what happens.

you might be able to convince them it was on purpose, but printing a canvas is expensive, and if the buyer says they don't like the noise even if it was on purpose, they may send it back and that's profit loss from here. so my guess would be, it wouldn't matter. taking your things to a local print shop won't tell you the full story.

1. they print it here, so it doesn't matter if they like it.
2. we can print at 100dpi due to the printing process, most shops want 300dpi. you can print a 60 - 70 inch print on here. make sure you compare apples to apples. because what they will say - it looks fine as an 8x12.

the close up image will always look distorted to prevent people from piecing it together later, though an adjustable sharpening would be nice.

It seems that aside from the sharpening that happens here (they should give the user the choice to disable it) the full res preview looks at giant files the same as lower rez files and the results look horrid. Imagine if you took a 14 by14 inch piece of paper and cut a 1 by 1 inch square out of the middle. Now lay it on an album cover. Look at that album cover thru the square. Take the same piece of paper and lay it on a billboard and look at it. I think that may be happening here. I`m gonna take my files to a local printshop that does artprints and talk to them about my files. If they`re OK with them...

And what if my artwork/photo was grainy on purpose? Why should ArtAmerica decide that was`nt the look I should present? I`ve seen grainy pics/art on walls.

Yes..thats Dondi. Glad to see someone recognized him. No connection to fatbuckel, though. I just feel like Dondi sometimes. Observing.

JR, I`ll send you those old house pix when I get back to my editing computer (I`m on tour now). I cropped the clapboard out because the house was not kept authentic. (note the 50`s style storm window frame on that pic)

Oh, thank you Fat B but not for me personally. I'd like to see (for buyers) more versions of that window. Great details, very nostalgic & it leads me to think that the house around the window is very old - & will probably look great having clapboard included in the shot. If you have more, & you would like someone to look them over with you to say "yes, that's it - that's the one", I would certainly enjoy helping out.
Watermark anything you send to anyone or post to a FB page. Your image is safe on here.... but once it gets out there..........

I noticed the sharpened effects on my uploads and like the overall presentation. I have read comments in the forums, re. FAA enlarging to a size where quality may be lost is a concern. I don't think it is a problem. I only hold back on whether I think the presentation is over sized from an artistic approach. Same for smaller than original size. I trust FAA to only print sizes that result in a great reproduction.

MM Anderson

That's good to know, Mike. If I had known that before I probably wouldn't have sharpened some things at all.

sean has been adjusting how it's being sharpened, but it does do that. i sharpened my stuff in a certain way, which the site them really sharpened, it highlighted all the noise, and hopefully it will print when it comes to it. i think they do it because not everyone remembers to sharpen it. they also seem to adjust contrast and touch up the saturation. because when i upload things on red bubble, the colors look dull and lifeless. zazzle is mixed up because they add the tint of how they think it looks on the product. and this site seems to be more intense then what it looks like in my own machine. and you'll see the colors change depending how it's used, like a small generated version has a different coloring then a large when posted in the forum. it's kind of confusing.

i think he thinks it helps sell things. and it seems to. yet at the same time, it enhances certain things just too much. now i don't know if the final piece is sharpened, or if it's just the preview, as i never ordered my own things before. but it's something to be aware of, don't sharpen it too much.

"this site sharpens all the images, especially up close. so whatever your sharpening method you have, be careful how you use it."
Mike, I didn't know that. Does the additional sharpening show up in the images as they appear on the website so the artist can evaluate the difference? Why would FAA do that to all images?

Mike Savad

this site sharpens all the images, especially up close. so whatever your sharpening method you have, be careful how you use it.

the grainy pictures - won't print here, they have a standard, and if looks noisy, blurry, etc, they will send a letter back and it will say to fix the shot or lose the sale. it has happened.

if you email a shot to someone, only send a small, the full size image is your money and you don't want to lose track of those. not that she's a thief, but others can be.

It` s a shame I can`t reply individually to each person. Thanx to all who responded. Please keep it coming. I noticed the grain on some of these pix and I`m not sure what happened. Some of these pix were shot right after I got this camera so it was`nt set up how I like it. I`m shooting in raw, full 24MP and almost 300px/inch. These pix are giant. 6000x4000 pixels. All I can figure is these were mostly shot at night, ISO being large numbered, it tends to be grainy. But I look at these pix on my 50inch monitor and they look fine. I mean... the grain is part of the photo. Any tips would be welcomed. I`ll try to add more keywords (and commas).

The name 'fatbuckel' is a misspelled version of Fatbuckle, one of the band members in Gumbys rock band. It kind of happened one night in the studio and stuck.

Janine Riley...I have six more of that house. I may post some more if I can make something of them. I could email you what I have if you like. Theres a barn and a house I found while out riding my motorcycle. It is some kind of park preserve area.

Keep in mind that FAA does not market your work, they market FAA. You are responsible for marketing your own images.

Photography Prints Welcome ! I love this image - do you have more of the house saved so that you can include the flaky paint ?
You're going to get a lot of advice here if you ask to be noticed. It can be a bit "ouchy" at first if you are just starting out.

But it is expert advice - so take a deep breath.... & be encouraged that people think you are worth noticing !

to get notices you have to advertise off the site, the forum helps with views, but not sales. you'll want more than 23 images. you want eye catching items that look good small.

Sell Art Online
this one has no description and almost no keywords. it's also very grainy up close. looks like you used reticulation on it, but they won't print it because it looks noisy.

Photography Prints
the same thing, no keywords and no description. keywords is the only way people will find you in the search and in google. clarity is better in this one.

Art Prints
this one will never print because of the noise, wait no. that's not noise but an odd effect that really looks like noise. in either case they may not print it and the buyer may think noise just like i did, and again - keywords.

Sell Art Online
of your shots i think this is the strongest, though there is a green tint. i didn't check with the others, but your keywords need a comma, or they become one word. i would give it a description as to why someone would want to have this in their home, rather then you stuck your head out the car window.

your avatar is confusing, i was expecting to see cartoons. overall, if you want to be seen you have to have more image, they need more keywords, those words need commas (you don't need spaces, but you do need commas, and descriptions. you want to create items that people may want in their house or office. that's about it.

Aren't we all? I took a look at your work. Your images seem a bit grainy and you need descriptions and more key words. I like some of your images' composition but the graininess may cause you problems with printing your work for sale.
