Something For The Painters Here (and Van Gogh Fans)

Heard this song today and thought of all the great painters here (something I will never be able to do).

I am sure you "old timers" know this song but maybe I can introduce it to a new generation?

Now it seems more and more people think Van Gogh didn't kill himself. At least that is what my art history teacher said.

Sometimes, though, the myth is better than the reality and the line...

"and when no hope was left inside, on that stary, stary night, you took your life as lovers often do..."

Sounds better than "you were accidentaly shot by some teenage hoodlums" (again, what I was told in art history class)

Lol. I guess I am in the category of " Dinosaurs". I actually know the words to this song, & American pie too.

Jon,

The version of this song that my generation knows the best is by Josh Groban. His is a very different genre and style since he's classically trained but it's beautiful nonetheless. It's such a wonderful song for the best painter.

Also, if anyone's interested, there's an AMAZING episode of Doctor Who where the Doctor and Amy Pond travel back in time to meet Vincent Van Gogh. The actor who plays him looks like he could really be Vincent and they do talk quite a bit about his life and his work. You'll definitely enjoy it if you're a fan of him!

Here is a wonderful version of the above song... sung by a brilliant artist/painter... has some interesting videos showing quick painting sessions and singing!

Thanks for posting, John. I don't remember this particular song, but I'm a HUGE Van Gogh fan. 4 Van Gogh prints in my office at work - been to the grave site, been to the room where he died (you have to pay a few euros to go up there), been to the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, and seen many of these paintings in person, some in the Orsay in Paris. I'm a groupie, you might say. Van Gogh is in my top 3. Oh, yeah, nice song too!

Always loved Don McLean's "Vincent" but another absolutely beautiful song, written and sung by him but made famous by others is "And I Love You So"

I love the two songs by Don McLean, the other is American Pie when I was growing up. Whenever it come on the radio I would stop everything just to listen . I wonder whatever happened to him?

John, thanks for posting this. Good to hear it again, and the video is great. You don't hear it
on the radio that often. It reminds me of high school , early '70s. I remember thinking that probably not
many people really listened or knew what it was about, other than likely a few others in art class.
I also like "American Pie", one the most popular of songs. (I Googled it). Maybe Don McLean had
a touch of genius too. Well, I'm going to drive my Chevy to the levy... Thanks again.
