This website is dedicated to the appreciation of the many forms of nature’s beauty in some of its creatures. Some of them are understood, some are not.
I was born in Tunisia. My parents and I moved to France when I was six months old. Living in a country filled with history, I have been surrounded by art for most of my adult life. My appreciation has always been there but never so poignant as when I began to underwater dive approximately 15 years ago. It was the book of J.J. Cousteau, “the World of Silence” that ignited my curiosity.
Initially, it began with a passion for sharks. The power, grace and beauty of these animals captured my attention as well as the understandable respect one has for these specimens. In the last couple of years I turned sculpting these creatures in three dimensions after photographing them during so many of my dives.
My former profession of being a dental ceramist and technician gave me many of the tools to see the form and details of any object and sculpting animals was very natural. In addition, also being a certified personal fitness trainer and owner of the 'Fitness Factory' helped me understand the anatomy and dynamic movements of the body. It was a simple translation of the muscles and bones to the overlying surface of the sharks and other animals. I also have to thank Jonathan Bickart, professor of sculpture, for his help and his precious advise.
I have found that there is also great misunderstanding of them as they are sometimes portrayed by the media or fantasy movies as mean and frightening. Although they are awesome in their potential voracity, they basically are simply perfectly evolved eating machines and hence their survival has been the result. After all, it is man who ventures into their home not them into ours.
This misunderstanding of the shark as well as other animals has impacted their survival by hunting and killing many of them. This may over time also affect the entire ecosystem in addition to the survival of these beautiful creatures.
One of my goals is to not only appreciate their beauty, but also to illuminate the importance of these animals and prevent their wanton killing. As such, I plan to donate some of the proceeds from the sales of my sculptures to charities and organizations dedicated to saving our environment and prevention of extinction of many animals.
I hope you the viewer will appreciate their magnificence as I do and support the world of art as well as our environment.
Humbly,
Victor Douieb
