Listening. Really listening....
It is one of the most difficult tasks for most of us to do. We are so busy thinking about what we have to do, what we want to say, where we have to go or where we’ve been. For me, listening and quieting my mind has been the catalyst for change and healing.
I began painting as a way of working through the grief of losing a dear family friend in a tragic car accident. From the moment my brush, laden and glistening with vibrant colors first touched the canvas, a part of my soul was opened up. I began to work through the pain by expressing my emotions with color. The paint gave my pain a voice. The colors spoke for me and the canvas was the perfect listener. The more I painted, the more I healed. To make this process possible, I had to listen, really listen to my soul and what it needed to tell me. What it needed to express.
When I paint, the outcome is never preconceived and always unexpected. What has surprised me are the hidden images that continue to appear in a lot of the paintings I have done. I often don’t realize most of them until others point them out. I also sign my paintings on the back of the canvas. I want the person to be able to put the painting in any position they want to, because in doing this, it can look like a completely different work of art and take on new meaning.
For me, painting is a necessity. Like oxygen, it is something I cannot live without. It has become part of me. I draw from my emotion and try to represent that emotion in the colors I use, the movement of those colors, and the feelings they evoke. Listening to what is going on inside and trusting the process helps to create the safe and sacred space for that emotion and voice to come out. I believe I have stories to tell. They cannot be told audibly. Let my soul be opened up. Let the paint be my voice and the canvas my listener. Let the stories be told.
I also have a love of photography and have decided to add some of my work in that area as well. I hope you are inspired and made joyful by it.
