Photochrom Prints
Photochom prints (photochrome) are black & white photos that were colorized through a photolithographic process. This method used from six to fifteen lithographic limestone plates to produce each print . . . Created in the 1880's in Switzerland, the Photochrom prints process was licensed to the Detroit Photographic Co. who produced as many as 7 million of the prints per year . . . PLEASE NOTE . . . Most of the photographs in the historic image galleries were taken over 100 years ago. The equipment and photo techniques were not perfected and the glass plates, negatives and photos were often stored without great care and as such exhibit flaws and imperfect focus. If the technical aspect is more important to you than the historic or artistic please check the full resolution preview carefully before purchasing a print. Take into account that the larger the print size the more exaggerated the 'flaws' will be.
