Creativity is woven into the very life, breath and heart of watercolor artist Michal Madison. Her soul pours out in every brushstroke. She shows up in the tearful eyes of a little girl and the laughter of a young boy, the piercing glare of an outraged woman and the affectionate gaze of a lover. Michal’s art is an expression of who she is, who she was, who she is becoming.
Michal has a unique ability to connect compassionately and authentically with others. Her favorite subject is people. “There is something astounding about revealing raw vulnerable emotions artistically through a person’s eyes” she says. Those emotion unite us at the deepest level of our humanity. She believes when we recognize ourselves in another, we experience a connection that banishes loneliness. Art speaks a universal language that every person can understand.
Michal believes art changes us. Art touches those deep places in our souls where no words exist. Art has been a source of deep healing for Michal, transforming deeply broken places in her life. Through art Creator revealed to her the exquisite truth that our worth is not dependent on circumstances or the opinion of another. We are valuable simply because we exist. Michal seeks to live every moment mindfully in the center of Creator’s love.
Although she never attended art school, she realized ultimately we become artists by creating. Michal began living her dream of being an artist in 2010. Art became an all-consuming passion. She loves the rich, vibrant, beautifully transparent colors, as well as the spontaneous nature of watercolors. She uses the white of the paper as the white in her paintings. This can be challenging. If she covers it up, it’s gone. She feels no amount of white paint can bring back the brilliance of leaving the paper untouched.
Michal believes that artistic “mistakes” are opportunities to get even more creative. This is something she often tells the neighborhood children who hang out at her house to draw, paint and eat popsicles. “All children are artist”, says Michal, “some of us just refuse to stop coloring outside the lines when we grow up.”
Michal was abused as a child and experienced domestic violence as an adult, she doesn’t allow that to define who she is. She bravely turned the page, refusing to believe that was how her journey would end. She shares her story to bring hope & inspire others to believe in their own dreams. We cannot erase the past, but we can choose to face it courageously and make a new ending. She chooses to donate ten percent of every sale to Childhelp, a foundation for prevention and treatment of child abuse. She believes every child is worth fighting for.
Michal is the mother of six cats who adopted her. She is in a committed relationship that enriches her life. She lives in freedom & joy, doing what she loves. Michal is creating a beautiful life, vastly different from her past.
