Michael Colligon - Fine Artist
I started as a photographer in high school. My ego forbids me from writing how long ago that actually was. When I was not participating in a sport or activity, I was usually photographing it for the school paper or yearbook.
I currently own and run a commercial and portrait studio in downtown Richmond and have for several years. I have photographed major sporting events like the Sugar Bowl and been published in the Richmond Times Dispatch.
I have been a member artist at Crossroads Gallery for numerous years and have won or placed in several numerous shows along the way.
It has been said many times that photography is painting with light. As a fine art photographer I keenly study the use of light by painters. “Rembrandt Lighting” is widely taught for photographers in the portrait world. I also study the work of painters for their use of light in landscape and still work. I use those same techniques to convey shape, interest and substance to photographic work that I create.
As a photographic artist, I continuously study all mediums of art and in particular painting to improve my own.
I believe that good art should appeal to you. It will be skillfully made, most likely by an artist who has created other works in a similar fashion.
The best art has meaning beyond just an image; perhaps it will bring you to tears, make you laugh, or remind you of something you’d almost forgotten. It also stands out in a crowd, and dares to be different.
Most importantly (in my opinion) good art is understandable, although it may make you think in ways you never expected to.
I hope you find my art makes you think and see.
Mike
