Fort Donelson National Battlefield
Fort Donelson was transferred from the War Department to the National Park Service on August 10, 1933, and was designated a national battlefield in 1985. The fort preserves the sites of Fort Donelson, Fort Heiman, and Fort Henry all Confederate. But in February of 1862, the Union led a successful battle against the forts. This major Union win, opened up the Tennessee River, and Cumberland River and contributed greatly to the success of the North winning the American Civil War.
