Leisa Temple - Fine Artist
The crest of a neck. The extension of a foreleg. The flick of a tail.
Leisa Temple is a horsewoman whose equine portraits bring to life the majesty and spirit of the equine form. From the thudding of hooves at a racetrack to a gentle nose muzzle between a mare and her foal, her work captures those singular moments with power and pathos.
Born and raised in Toronto, Leisa is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Sheridan College. She has been involved with horses all her life, first with hunters on the show circuit for a decade and later with three-day eventing.
In the 1980s, Leisa moved to Miami to study and paint horses at the prestigious Hialeah Park and Gulfstream Park racetracks. She soon developed a flourishing business, with major commissions from some of the top names in thoroughbred racing. When she returned to Toronto, she continued her equine portraiture, with the city’s Woodbine Racetrack as her inspiration.
Leisa’s interest soon extended to dogs, and in particular Rhodesian Ridgebacks, which she has owned for the past 20 years. “I think the horse person in me was initially attracted to this beautiful breed,” she reflects.
Her ability to capture these athletic canine thoroughbreds on canvas made her one of the most sought-after artists in that breed community. She has painted several logos for the breed’s most prestigious show, the National Specialty, most recently for its 2010 iteration in Ventura, California.
A versatile artist, Leisa works in oil, acrylic, watercolour and bronze.
“Each medium appeals to me because each has its own individual quality that I like to use in keeping with the individuality of each project,” she explains. “My goal is to combine the technical knowledge I’ve garnered over the years with a more artistic, colourful side.”
Leisa has had several successful exhibitions at the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Sales at Woodbine, plus showings at the Fort Erie Racetrack for the Prince of Wales Stake day. She has also exhibited at the Turf Club at Hialeah during the Flamingo Stakes.
Leisa works full time from her studio on the Niagara River. Her works hang in many private collections throughout North America, Australia, Europe, Asia and the Caribbean
