Julia Watson - Fine Artist
Although she now works full time as an artist, Julia earned her Ph.D. in microbiology and worked for many years as a research scientist. “I was always interested in art, even when I was a working scientist. My training in science taught me to observe carefully, which is important in painting. Learning to really see things is crucial for a painter.”
Julia has studied privately with Suzanne Welch, a watercolorist in San Jose, and taken classes with George Rivera, Executive Director of the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara. In addition she has attended workshops with Warren Chang, Stephen Scott Young, Mary Whyte, Rose Frantzen and Sherrie McGraw.
Julia paints in oil, acrylic and watercolor, letting her visual idea for each painting drive the decision of which medium to use. “I paint slowly, trying to absorb the details and the mood of the subject. I often paint in thin layers, building up glazes of color. I’m always trying to paint the grace and beauty around us in the material world. I don’t have to travel far and wide to see it – it’s around me in my home and garden.”
Galleries representing Julia include Los Gatos Museums Gallery at 24 N. Santa Cruz Ave., Los Gatos, CA and in Rivermist Home Décor, 614 California Ave., Libby, MT. She is a member of Oil Painters of America and the Los Gatos Art Association. She is drawn to paintings with a strong emotional content and is interested in how expression can be achieved through the thoughtful use of composition and color. She has been influenced by the great realistic painters, especially those who use light and color to express strong moods. A few of her favorite painters are Vermeer, Caravaggio, N. C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, Janet Fish, Stephen Scott Young. ”
Julia’s work has been juried into the California Art Club’s Magnificent Miniatures Show and has won awards in the Los Gatos Art Association Member Juried Show and the Fremont Art Association Open Juried Show.
