'Pyrography is the art or process of producing designs on wood, paper, leather, or other materials using a heated tool, flame or solar energy.'
It has been said that a true artist can bring forth life from her chosen medium, but it is an even greater gift when she can evoke emotions in the viewer.
Always looking for something creative to do, Jo was in her 40ís when she first sensed the hidden life in wood. With few tools and no teacher, she began to explore the mysteries of burning images on wood. Each piece has inherent softness or hardness in the grain requiring skill and sensitivity to reveal its unique beauty.
Jo is a native Kansan who began burning in 2004. She loves all forms of art - having tried them all, but never settling until finding Pyrography. There is something fulfilling about finding the right piece of wood - no two pieces are ever the same- , and then having the subject and grain of the wood merge into a ONE OF A KIND treasured piece of art.
Her love of adventure - began last year as she spent her first season on 'The Ice'. (Ross Ice Shelf - McMurdo Station, Antarctica) She is going to be on 'The Ice' for one more austral summer. (Oct - Feb.)
