Born August 3rd, 1969, in Johannesburg, South Africa, Janice Kirkpatrick [nee Meyer] immigrated to the Bay Area in 1981, at age 11, with her parents and younger brother. She brought with her vivid childhood memories of the tribal African art and the energetic pulse of Africa.
Janice graduated from San Mateo High School in 1987. In her senior year she was a winner in the Capitol Arts Program initiated by state senator Jackie Speier. She was elevated to academic advanced placement in art in her last two years of high school where she took part in various activities, including journalism and the creation of a school newspaper for children in advanced classes. She was also elected Publicity Commissioner for her senior class. She earned her AA [Associates of Arts] degree in 1990 from the Community College of San Mateo and her BFA degree in painting and sculpture from San Jose State University in 1993. She has shown extensively on the San Francisco Peninsula. Her most recent exhibition was a one-woman show called -“Spirit Art”- at the ART Share Gallery in San Mateo in July of 2004. She has been in many group shows around the SF Bay Area for the past 25 years, including the 1870 Art Center in Belmont, the United Unitarian Church on Geary and Franklin & various coffee houses in and around San Francisco, Half Moon Bay & the SF peninsula. She has sold her works both privately and publicly now for over 25 years, to various art lovers and individuals who recognize her unique talent of seeing inter-dimensionally.
Her work combines the strong colors of African culture with her unique inner visions of universal symbolism. Her paintings and drawings often reflect dream imagery, with a definite lyrical and musical influence. The lines and forms created by Janice depict a strong sense of intuitive knowing and a deeper understanding of the natural world and how that relates to our human mind and its connection to the creative force that lives within each of us as well as all around us.
The meshing of Africa and America is evident as well, in that she combines the natural earthiness of the African continent with the flashy, fast paced energy of contemporary America. She was exposed to art as a child through her parents’ influence, both as creative people and as art lovers, and saw the many ways she could express herself.
Janice also writes poetry, spiritual children’s books, science fiction and creates wonderful healing necklaces & medicine “walking” sticks which are featured along with her bronzes on her website ~ http://www.janicekirkpatrick.com
