Janelle Schneider is a painter and CG Visual Effects Artist for film and television. A native of Portland, Oregon, Schneider received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from PNCA with a major in Graphic Design, and was awarded with 'Best of Design' in the Faculty Choice Show in 1997 and the 'Outstanding Thesis Award in Graphic Arts' in 1998.
Her passion for painting began in early childhood when she was given professional oil paints, brushes, and canvas, and she began to paint imaginary worlds to escape into. She draws inspiration from the spirituality of nature, interwoven with mythos and dreaming. Her favorite time of day is after the sun has set but before night falls, those minutes during which the sky still holds the echo of the light. She is interested in liminality - of possibilities that exist “in between” one state and another. Her paintings combine waking reality with elements of dreaming.
A Portland design professional, she moved to the San Francisco bay area in 2002 to begin work on the films Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions. Janelle remained in the bay area working as a 3d texture artist on films for various studios including Dreamworks and Disney, while maintaining her own studio practice in acrylics. During this time her work began to take on a more introspective and meditative direction.
Schneider contributed 14 paintings for the 'Suit of Wands/Stars' for the group project The Science Tarot, which received the Maker’s Faire Editor’s Choice Blue Ribbon in San Francisco, 2010. Schneider has exhibited across the San Francisco Bay Area, including shows at the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts in Mill Valley, the Joseph P. Bort Metro Center in Oakland, the Olive Hyde Gallery in Fremont, and the SOMArts Cultural Center in San Francisco. Her works are held in private collections in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Norway.
She currently lives and works in Happy Valley, Oregon.
