I have always been involved in some sort of creative endeavor. From airbrush art to acrylic and oils, I have ventured on a lifetime of Techniques and explorations. However, my true passion is abstract expressionist art and mixed media abstract painting. It is this form of painting that I feel most represents the music style of Jazz ; my other passion. The free style of jazz is an inspirational art form that I transcribe into a visual image.
Through colors and composition, I convert sound to imagery - a spontaneity of random brush strokes that convey the sense of feeling I get from Jazz music. Always searching and experimenting is the key to my creative energy. Most often I'm asked if i have a visual image in my minds eye before I begin. I may begin with some concept but more often than not the painting takes on a new life as the process is unfolding.
My mixed media work involves mostly images that I have taken around town. If I see a torn billboard that has had numerous Ads and torn off over and over i take a picture of it. I shoot pics of random stuff like an old faded sign, dilapidated buildings, and railroad car graffiti. I have a library of thousands of images. From these random images I may even then intermingle them in photoshop. I then print them out and even tear up into pieces what I printed to use in the art. The work takes on a life of its own as it progresses. The dynamics and composition change with every scrap of paper glued to the canvas.
The abstract expressionist paintings I do are the hardest to describe. All the while attempting to insert a rhythm in the flow of the brush stroke and be as spontaneous as possible, it must have a balance that works. Always painting while listening to Jazz is my key method of inspiration and rhythm.
