James Carl McKnight

I am a fantasy artist in the classic style. My major influences are Frank Frazetta and Berni Wrightson, but I am inspired by everyone and everything. I tend to illustrate subject matter with more of a moody, dark atmosphere, yet am willing to try any genre or style. I have the confidence and skill to pull off anything, I believe.
My artwork is distinct. In a world full of Anime, Manga and the like, I think my art really stands out. I guess you could say that my style is somewhat 'retro', yet I feel it is contemporary enough to compete in today's modern illustration market.
My main interest is in book illustration. My artwork tends to depict scenes of action, which greatly aids in the storytelling process and would be a welcome addition to any book. My dream is to one day illustrate the Classics in fantasy that I adore. Robert E. Howard's works, Tolkien, Lewis Carrol, etc. The list is far too lengthy to include here!
I have over 30 plus years experience drawing. I have recently gone digital and mostly illustrate with Photoshop (and my Wacom tablet), but I still employ my traditional pencil with a vengeance (when called upon to do so). I prefer the digital domain, however, as the possibilities are virtually endless. I promise you more color pieces in the future!
I'm all over the web on several sites. DeviantArt, SFF World, Epilogue, Elfwood, ArtUproar, to name a few. On most of these sites I am known as Culhain.

I like THIS site, but some of the examples of my digital work (exhibited here) seem overly compressed and pixelated. The lower res image serves as a watermark, I suppose. The original digital files of all my artwork are HUGE. They are 300dpi, a higher res, so everything prints much more clearly!
