Artist Biography
My mother and father were born into the dust bowl era of Oklahoma which is where my sister and I were born. We were a nomadic family, by that I mean that by my 14th birthday we had lived in nine states. At that point my parents divorced and each of them then stopped their roaming. My father settled in Sacramento and my mother in Pasadena. At the age of 12 at the Tuolumne County Fair, I sang solo “Oh Dem Golden Slippers”. Then my voice changed.
I graduated from Santa Monica High School, served in the Air Force, and went to Pasadena Junior College. I raised my family in Santa Rosa, California as a Developer and General Contractor. Then my wife and I divorced and I moved to Sacramento where I met and married my now wonderful wife, Laura. Until 3 years ago we owned and operated a carpet cleaning business and then we retired. And that is when---
I arrived at a turning point in my life—A Decision—I had often wondered if I had a knock for painting. So I began taking various art classes at American River, Sierra and Sacramento City Colleges simply to see if there was hope. I did pray for a spark of artistic ability to show up. My painting goal was simple, learn how to paint mountains, streams, trees and clouds. Perhaps a road or a fence.
I have used both acrylic and oil mediums. No “style” seems to have developed as yet. I am in transition, learning and just waiting to see what’s next. Two of my instructors have called me a colorist.
My painting journey has been one of personal enjoyment which fills my days with questions of how to do this and what about that. The thought process never ends. If at the end I have become successful by any measure then I would have been able to help others as others have helped me.
A famous artist “Hokusai” in the 18th century said “I was 72 when I started painting, when I was 82 I was kind of getting the hang of it, by the age of 92 I believed that there was hope and by the time I reached 100 I had it figured out.”
I started my personal painting journey at 72 and am following Mr. Hokusai to see where it leads. I am hopeful that there will be someone who enjoys a painting and if that happens then I would be thankful. Mr. Hokusai passed away at slightly over 100.
