I grew up in southern Missouri (U.S)...I remember drawing long before I learned to write........and have painted since I managed to acquire paint and brushes in grade school. I chose to marry very young (to a career Navy guy, so we moved around a lot during those twenty some years)...instead of pursuing art as a career as my parents urged, but I never stopped painting, even while raising our children .
I paint less often these past few years but have every medium at my finger tips and canvas' set up always, the drawing board all laid out with the necessary materials... water colors, acrylic, and pastels...all handy in the studio, all I have to do is walk in and pick up whatever I choose to work with.
I began accepting commissioned work in the 1980 while we lived for several years in the high desert plains of Arizona (near Sedona)...relocated to southern Maryland in1999. This is when we began traveling for pleasure, and I began concentrating on 'blues legend ' portraits. I found a wonderful venue in Mississippi from which to market my work...and in one three months period I painted 52 portraits to be installed there in time for the Juke Joint Festival in Clarksdale, Ms.
Actually, the very famous actor Morgan Freeman now owns one of my paintings and it has been displayed for over ten years in the 'up scale' restaurant that he owns in Clarksdale, Ms. One of my happiest evenings was dining as one of his guests the evening that he took possession of this painting. My husband and I attend several blues festivals and we especially enjoy spending time in the Mississippi delta area, then on into Cajun country (southwestern Louisianna...)
Mostly these days we fly to these places and then rent a car, but we prefer making the trips in the 1979 V W Westfalia (bus). Unfortunately, we're no longer as young as we'd like, and driving requires a bit more time than we usually are able to be away from home, so driving across country happens rarely. However, I also love to write (song lyrics, poetry, researching and writing an illustrated family history book is my current project, and I enjoy cooking, sewing, etc...of course, all this is why I paint less these days, I just want to do it all, and there is so little time!
