Born in Sydney, Australia, 1948 and growing up in Papua New Guinea, (now living in America since 1999) I’ve had most of my life to enjoy being an artist in one sense or another. From dabbling in designing business cards to art director, overseeing special publishing projects for one of Australia’s notable publishers, I’ve run the gamut of art assignments. Add to all that, a 10 to 12 year period of involvement with one of Sydney’s leading amateur theatrical groups (FAMS) as their resident assistant set designer/builder, set painter, graphic designer for marketing, follow-spot operator and cameraman. And during the same period I was involved with a technical lighting and sound team that managed all the tech requirements for a major evangelical conference center that drew upwards of 7,000 people to our christian conferences about 6 times a year.
But there was always my art. Despite my numerous commitments I’ve always tried to find time to draw and paint. Up until early 2009 I have worked with oils and acrylics, as well as colored pencil. In February, 2009 I made a decision to specialize in pencil as my preferred medium. I especially like an assignment that requires me to carry out research on the subject; I have a penchant for anything historical - any period. As far as subject matter is concerned I don’t have any preferences, yet give me a real ‘character’ face and I’m in my element. All that, too, changed direction in February 2009. At the same time I chose to concentrate on pencil work, I decided to make my preferred subject matter anything to do with Australia.
I’ve always been fascinated by stories depicting the strength of the human spirit; how people have fought all manner of adversities and, in the end, triumphed—though they may have had to pay a heavy sacrifice for their achievement. It is this indomitable aspect of the human spirit that I try to capture in my work, especially my character pieces—and which, as I commence work on my Australian series, “Man from Snowy River and Others” I hope to portray. Incorporated into this will be scenery and wildlife from Down Under, a lot of which is new to people overseas.
I hope to apply my gift of artistic ability to enhancing the ‘Australian Spirit’; to create an awareness of the beauty and wonders that great continent holds for all to enjoy.
