I graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Art Education degree in 1982 and began my teaching career while continuing to do my own artwork. As a student teacher I learned how to create stained glass . I loved the medium so much that I spent the next twenty years creating original glass art commissions for residences all over the United States including Hawaii. Eventually, I found myself needing a more immediate result than the long , multi- step process that is involved in making glass art. I found inspiration from my students who created a large wall piece using foam insulation, metal artist Kristen DeSantis an my favorite painter Georgia O‘Keeffe. So I began to build these 3-dimensional foam core paintings using acrylic paint and polyurethane to seal them. The content of my work has to do with the human condition… love, loss, letting go, gratitude and a benevolent force which is ever present. I did a series of one hundred butterflies called Metamorphosis ….in honor of how life is filled with “a sudden and drastic change” as defined by the dictionary. My latest series is called Life Puzzle. The inspiration comes from the balancing act …the need to fit in the puzzle pieces of life…such as time for loved ones and our own passions.
