Prairie Dogs

Today the five species of Prairie dogs occupy a mere 5% of their former range in continental North America. The Black-tailed Prairie Dogs are communal and once lived in extremely large "towns" which were mostly exterminated in the 20th century by farmers and ranchers. Ironically Prairie Dogs became a popular pet in the USA and even Tokyo in the mid 1990's. Since Prairie Dogs are extremely social, owners should be willing to commit to spending at least two hours a day with their Prairie dog or consider getting another so the creature has a companion. .....
