I came from a very artistically talented family, my father was a very good pencil artist, sketching cartoons and surroundings of his youth. My sister, Dona, draws and paints well, and was an executive with Trans Art Industries in its early inception in Atlanta, Georgia. My sister, Beverly, also an artist, worked at The Tampa Museum years ago, and has been the personal assistant to pop artist James Rosenquist for twenty eight years.
Graphite and ink were always far more important to me than school. I had sketched my way through every class, never letting school or homework get in the way of drawing. If I looked to be deep in thought during the school day, I was actually just concentrating on the image I was drawing, trying to figure out how to make it more dimensional and realistic. By the end of my senior year in high school, I walked away from a scholarship to Pratt Institute and joined the Navy. I needed a half credit to graduate but my intense dislike for school and having to attend summer school was out of the question.
When I returned to Tampa after almost four years of military service, my first job was as an artist for The Tampa Tribune Newspaper Company. I realized after some time that not being able to draw what I wanted was not stirring my creative juices. I made the decision to get a better paying job and pursue my own art in the evenings.
Twenty years ago my profession as an inspector with the F.E.M.A. required photographs to document damages to houses and property from natural disasters, and more recently as a commercial insurance inspector I began photographing businesses from shopping centers to mobile home parks to skyscrapers. In a typical day, traveling to multiple locations, I would take up to 600 photos. I fell in love the medium of photography and learned a great deal about digitally enhancing photos, which is an art in itself.
On my website you will see a collection of original paintings, drawings, and photographs (some digitally enhanced to draw out the picture's complexities). I am excited to have this opportunity to share my work with you.
Thanks for coming to my web gallery and I hope you like my work.
