I just love it when someone asks what I'm up to and I can say, 'Coloring!' Colored Pencil is such a wonderful medium for me. The colors are intense and vibrant, the methods are (mostly) non-toxic and do not require an enormous workspace, and they are easily transportable. Instant gratification!
I went to art school many moons ago but does anyone really care about that? Art school really only prepared me to get into more art schools. How to prepare a portfolio does not do much to earn an income. It taught me a lot about technique and subject matter and design theory and all that. It did not teach me one thing about the business that is art.
The moral of that story is that anyone can learn to draw and some can do it extremely well. Being an artist is as much about a state of mind and a way of life as it is mastering technique. To go through life with an artist's eye is to look at everything as if it can be re-purposed into something else. After all, a portrait of someone's face is really only a collection of shapes. Maybe we should be called collectors ;-)
