About Amy Reisland-Speer

Paint allows me to express the beauty I see in nature and people. I aspire to capture the world realistically with paint but not photographically. I want my images to have the feeling of paint but be somewhat realistic.

I was raised in Tanana, Denali Park and Salcha, Alaska and currently reside in Healy with my husband of 21 years and 9 year old son. Being a born and raised Alaskan I have never lacked for interesting subjects. Acrylics, oils and egg tempera are my favorite mediums. My subjects include landscapes, wildlife, subsistence activities, everyday scenes of Alaska, and Orthodox icons.

I prefer to use the oils and acrylics for landscapes, and Alaskan images such as dogsleds, abandoned vehicles and the curious containers Alaskans use as flower planters. Egg tempera lends itself well to the small paintings of wildlife with much detail as well as the icons due to its brilliance next to gold leaf. My favorite subjects include moose and caribou. I prefer to paint them in bright unrealistic colors but with a realistic form. I enjoy painting ravens inflight and in magical settings. Currently, I am working on a series of Ravens. I chose ravens because being raised Athabaskan I have a deep respect and warm heart for these mystical birds. It took me years before I attempted to paint a raven I was so concerned about it not being perfect. I have come to a personal understanding that none of my paintings are perfect and will never be so I continue to follow my heart and paint what feelings I have about the animal, scene or object at the moment.

My goal as an Alaskan artist is to paint all things Alaskan, preserve our way of life and show the future generations how good our life is up here and represent our lives with my work. It seems I never have enough time to paint all the subjects I would like to so I do what I can and look forward to completing a painting and beginning the next.
