Amber was born in New Zealand and has a lifelong affinity for her home country which comes through strongly in her work. She has always been interested in the natural world and the everyday wonders it holds for those who bend down or stretch up to notice.
Amber has not always painted or been interested in art, her interest beginning in earnest sitting for long hours in a hospital bed. One day, her gaze happened to rest on the unexciting corner of the room and study how its lines came together. That was the day she got her 'art eyes' - that way of seeing the world for what it really is away from laws of physics and geometry. The world stopped being comprised of objects and became shapes, lines, positive and negative spaces, colour and contrast. Nothing was ever truly black or white again!
When painting, she takes a rather unorthodox approach of starting with the eyes of a person or animal, the brightest patch of sun on a hill or flower - the soul of the subject - and builds up everything else around it, letting it paint itself on out. Not sure how that would go down in art school! Never mind.
Many paintings are in the hands of friends or family - surely the gift of art is in the giving not the having. There is a wondrous, turbulent ride from blank page to the completion of a piece, a roller coaster of techniques to master, problems to right and always there is learning at the heart of the process.
