I recently started painting on both canvas and recycled old windows. Some of my work is more realistic, while others are more stylized with bright colors and bold patterns. What I like to capture is the moment — whether it is a whimsical look, the light or an interesting texture.
I am inspired by nature and try to celebrate what is extraordinary in each animal, bird or insect. I think my work portrays the personality and expressions of the animals I paint. I like experimenting with textures and colors while still keeping my subject fairly realistic and then contrasting them against an abstract background.
What's with the chickens? Since I had not painted in years, I was not sure where to even begin. What to paint? I had worked with local, sustainable farms and taken pictures of these funny, inquisitive goats and an amazing array of chickens. I loved the textural patterns the feathers make from certain breeds of chickens and just the intense look they give you when you are trying to take their picture. So, that's where I started — for me, the chicken came first.
