John Gruber

I was introduced to the art world at my brother's studio in Boston in the 1970's. I learned the fundamentals of wheel thrown pottery from my brother and evolved the rest of my clay skills from personal experience. My technical knowledge developed over a 12-year period while I worked in research and development for a fine china manufacturer. I attained expertise in all aspects of production glaze and clay forming techniques. I have explored stoneware, porcelain, raku and earthenware clays as a means of forming my ideas into creative shapes that include functional use as well as sculptural expressions. I have developed my own clay and glaze formulas as a result of this exploration. My interest in art and its expression is not limited by the medium. I have found expression in several. As well as a potter and sculptor in clay I am also a professional Sand Sculptor with works created in Europe as well as across the USA. I have also created sculptures in a variety of mixed media. My other artistic talents include graphic art, website design and creative writing. I love photography and occasionally I am inspired to paint. I am also a songwriter with some decent guitar skills.
To keep my mind and body in a good place I have been practicing Tai Chi T'uan for over 20 years. All of my adult life I have sought a voice of communication in my art and on occasion I find my work has spoken.
During my early years I participated in competitive art shows and took home many awards but I was never really into competing with others. For me the only real competition was with myself.....could I create an inspired feeling into an inspired work....that was and still is the only thing that gives me satisfaction.....a feeling of being alive!
Currently I am working in stoneware and porcelain clays with sculptural integration.
I accept commission work in sculpture, pottery, graphic art, painting and sand sculpture.
