Winters are long for country kids in both Canada and the northeastern USA. For many generations these boys and girls spent much of their time out-of-doors, often skating on frozen farm ponds. A few friends would gather on a hastily shoveled rink for an afternoon of "shinny" and plenty of fresh air. Equipment was often scarce, sometimes even lacking skates. Goal posts were improvised with such readily available items as a pair of boots or even blocks of firewood.
About Richard De Wolfe
The Thousand Islands region of Ontario, Canada, was the perfect backdrop for a childhood filled with adventure for Richard De Wolfe, an artist who still identifies strongly with rural life. The forests, fields, and of course the mighty St. Lawrence River, made the wonders of nature come alive for him. The art of Richard De Wolfe has been very popular ever since his first one-man show at the age of eighteen. That show was a sell out, supplying him with commissions for many months after.
