"The Glide" fine art photography by Annette Hugen. Great Blue Heron - Ardea herodias. This close-up shot of aGreat Blue Heron was photographed in Mountain View, Arkansas while gliding over the White River. Great Blue Heron's are often mistaken for Sandhill Cranes but they fly with their necks folded, not extended like a Crane's. This large heron can be frequently found standing at the edge of a pond or marshy pool, watching for fish or frogs, which are its principal food. It also feeds on small mammals, reptiles and occasionally birds. Most Great Blue Herons migrate south in the fall, but a few remain in the North during the winter; such lingering birds often fall victim to severe weather.
